1、On Charles DickensCharles dickens who was born in 1812 and died in 1870 is one of the greatest critical realist writers of the Victorian Age. It is his intention to expose and criticize in his works all the poverty, injustice, hypocrisy and corruptness he sees around him. But his social attitudes ar

2、e very complicated. He hates the state apparatus, especially the Parliament, but as a bourgeois writer, he can in no way supply any fundamental solution to the social plights. The best he can do seems to try to retain an optimism with wishful thinking, as in his early works; or to express a hopeless

3、 indignant protest, as in his later novels. And yet, whatever his limitations, this man is loved and admired by the millions, not only for the practical reform his works have helped to bring about, but also for the heart which is ready to love and sympathize.Charles Dickens is a master story- teller

He created all kinds of odd, amusing, and delightful people in his stories They seem to us, as we read of them, to live and to become our friends, as real as the folk whom we meet every day His novels did a great deal of good also, for in many of them “public wrongs and shames were held up to scor

5、n” People read the novels and thought deeply about the lessons they taught, and as a result ,many an evil in this country was either cured or destroyed altogetherDickens works draws the readers attention and holds it to the end. The settings of his stories, such as, London, have an extraordinary viv

6、idness, a result of years intimacy and rich imagination.In language, he is often compared with Shakespeare for his adeptness with the vernacular and large vocabulary with which he brings out many a wonderful verbal picture of man and scene . His humor and wit seem inexhaustible. Character-portrayal

7、is the most distinguishing feature of his works. Among a vast range of various characters , marked out by some peculiarity in physical traits, speech or manner ,are both types and individuals .His best depicted characters are those innocent ,virtuous , persecuted ,and helpless child characters such

8、as Oliver Twist ,Little Nell, David Coperfield and Little Dorrit ,Dickens writes best when he writes from the childs point of view.Dickens is also famous for the depiction of those horrible and grotesque characters like Fagin, Bill Sikes , and Quilp, and those broadly humorous or comical ones like M

9、r. Micawber, Sam Weller, and Mrs. G.amp. However,these characters are impressive not only because they are true to life ,but also because they are larger to the life .In a way , they are the embodiments of human beings ,with some particular features exaggerated and highlighted, exposed to the degree

10、 of extremity.Dickens works are characterized by a mingling of humor and pathos .He seems to believe that life itself is a mixture of joy and grief. Life is delightful because it is at once comic and tragic.Dickens is a great humorist. Whether he exaggerates a persons physical traits to achieve a dr

11、amatic effect or to ridicule his personal defeats, whether he means to be light- heartedly jocular or bitterly satirical, he is sure to produce roaring laughter or understanding smiles .To match his humorous genius, Dickens is also noted for his pictures of pathos-No one has ever read the death bed.

12、 Scenes of little Nell (the old curiosity shop) and little Paul (Dombey and Son) can forget them. The pain strikes people to the heart Fears are shed unashamedly by men , literature or illiterate. Nonetheless, here also lies the danger for the artist. Sometimes, Dickens seems to anxious to wring an

13、extra tear from the audience that he indulges himself in excessive sentimental melodrama spoils the story.Yet for all that, Charles Dickens is one of the greatest Victorian writers ,and his name will be remembered forever. These are just a little about Dickens ,it is necessary for me to learn more a

14、bout him and his works in order to enlarge my knowledge horizon .Many of Dickens works deserve to be read again and again like “Great Expectations”, ”A tale of two cities” ” and so on. His critical realist novels not only make the English literature take on a new look , but also make great contributions to the development of the world literature. Therefore, we should remember him and his works for good.
