Note-taking Skill ------The Cornell Method Note-taking Skill: The Cornell MethodThe Cornell Method is frequently used by students to take notes. In this method you divide the paper into two columns. You record main points in the left column and related or supporting details in the right column. By doing this, you can easily follow the speaker and organize the information better.Back Cornell MethodnThe Cornell Notes system (also Cornell note-taking system or Cornell method) is a note-taking system devised in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor in Cornell University. nIt’s also known as Cornell’s 5R’s of Note Taking: Record, Reduce, Recite,Reflect(思考), Review. nThe Cornell method provides a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes. nThe student divides the paper into two columns: the note-taking column (usually on the right) is twice the size of the questions/key word column (on the left). nThe student should leave five to seven lines, or about two in (5 cm), at the bottom of the page. nNotes usually consist of the main ideas of the text or lecture, and long ideas are paraphrased. Long sentences are avoided; symbols or abbreviations are used instead. nTo assist with future reviews, relevant questions (which should be recorded as soon as possible so that the lecture and questions will be fresh in the student's mind) or key words are written in the key word column. nWithin 24 hours of taking the notes, the student must revise and write questions and then write a brief summary in the bottom five to seven lines of the page. nWhen reviewing the material, the student can cover the note-taking (right) column while attempting to answer the questions/keywords in the key word or cue (left) column. nListening Skill: Listening for Main IdeasNow, let’s reinforce the use of this method. Divide the paper into two columns and then write down the main points in the left column and the supporting or related details in the right column. 。
