13、spects of Computer-Mediated Communication“ which I co- organized and chaired at the Fourth International Pragmatics Conference in Kobe, Japan, on July 27, 1993. Four papers were presented in that panel, three of which (Korenman Meagher Yates) are included in revised form here. My own panel presentat

14、ion, which was a summary of some previous work, has been replaced in this volume with a chapter reporting previously unpublished research. The remaining 10 chapters were selected for inclusion in response to a call for papers distributed widely on the Internet. At the same time, the theme of the vol

15、ume was broadened to include social as well as linguistic and cultural issues associated with computer-mediated communication. All 14 chapters present original scholarly research in areas where little or no scholarship has existed in the past. Jef Verschueren, President of the International Pragmati

16、cs Association, deserves much of the credit for the publication of this volume. It was he who first proposed the idea of an edited collection, offering the Pragmatics and Beyond series as a publication venue. Recognition is also due to Brenda Danet whose idea it was to organize the Kobe panel, and who did much of the organizational work in the early stages, but who unfortunately was unable to attend the conference.
