Chinese people have accumulated a great deal of knowledge and experience in struggling against various diseases for thousands of years.A large number of traditional medicines,the majority of which were derived from plant sources,were recorded in Chinese ancient classics.Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)has made substantial contribution to the flourish and prosperity of the nation.Today,it is still very popular in China and plays an important role in health care.Because Chinese traditional medicinal herbs are of reliable therapeutical effects and unlikelihood of inciting side-effects,they have been appreciated by the Chinese masses of people.This is especially true in the rural areas and the remote districts,where the herbs can be found and used almost at all times and places whenever necessary.Recently,with the changes of human illness the people all over the world are making an appeal to go back to the nature,and getting to like natural resource.Meanwhile the influence of Chinese herbal medicines is over increasing in many countries.However,in the 21st century,TCM will be heavily pounded by the new tide of science and technology when it comes to the world.Now all the people in China are deeply concerned with the modernization of Chinese Materia Medica(CMM).Because most of CMM is derived from plant sources,strengthening researches on the medicinal plants of China is foundation of the Peoples Republic of China,several large scale of surveys and special projects on the medicinal plant resources have been conducted in our country.New information concerning the Chinese medicinal resources,scientific identification,chemical constituents,pharmacological experiments and clinical applications was acquired continually.On the basis of those projects,many new Chinese scientists made a breakthrough in the history of treating malaria with quinine and chloroquine exclusively.Aremisnin and its derivatives(artesunate and artemether)showed marked effect in the treatment of chloroquine resistant malaria,pernicious malaria and cerebral malaria.The WHO authorities have given credits to the development of artemisinin as a great contribution to the world
