Love is one of lifes great mysteries. For many

2、people, love, or the quest to find love, is a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Then what is love? Thousands of years have passed; the meaning still remains purely undefined.Love is the attraction, desire, or affection felt by a person for a person who arouses delight or admiration or tendern

3、ess, sympathetic interest or benevolence.”published in Websters Third New International Dictionary of the English Language (1979:1340). In our view, love is a special feeling that involves a strong desire to be with a specific other person. Love can be expressed differently by the people who play di

4、fferent roles in your life. John Cowburn (2003)stated in Love that love can be classified as self-love and love of others. There are two kinds of love of others, each of which has two species. One kind of love is called solidarity-love, whose existence is due to the link between people. One species

5、of this kind of love is the love between unequals, like the love between a parent and a child. The other is the love between equals, like the love between brothers and sisters. Another kind of love is ecstatic love, which has two species: sexual love and friendship. The love which is going to be dis

6、cussed in this thesis is not self-love, not paternal love, not friendship, but sexual love. Furthermore, it is the heterosexual love, not the homosexual one. Therefore, the love that is going to be discussed in this thesis is the heterosexual love. Love has been a staple of what is deemed great art

7、and literature as well as soap opera,popular music and advertising. Yet, there is not much scientific information about the love.Perhaps, the topic of love is so familiar that most people think they have read extensively on the subject. The limited research on love is almost always from the perspect

8、ives of psychology,Philosophy and religion. Psychologist Robert Sternberg (1986) formulated a triangular theory of love and argued that love had three different components: intimacy, commitment, and passion.Plato defined love as the desire for oneself to possess what was beautiful. He didnt see that

9、 love fundamentally and primarily had people as its object; for Plato, the love of persons was placed far below the love of an abstract entity, absolute beauty. The Bible speaks of love as a set of attitudes and actions that are far broader than just the concept of love, stating that love is a chara

10、cteristic of God. Love is seen as a set of behaviors that humankind is encouraged to act out.There have been few intercultural studies on love. Fortunately, thanks to the prosperousness of intercultural communication, the intercultural study on love catches much more attention than before. However,

11、they just display this phenomenon through cases of intercultural conflicts and clashes on love and offer a brief analysis, without supportive theories, root cause analysis or suggested solutions. As there has been little work conducted on intercultural love, especially on the intercultural love betw

12、een Chinese and Western cultures,this thesis is going to narrow the gap. Although there are numerous cross cultural unified similarities of love, as there is a thread of commitment, tenderness and passion common to all human being, differences still exist.Love is believed as a power that can conquer

13、 everything in one culture, whereas in other as a poison that needs to be controlled and buried. Showing ones love is seen as romantic conduct in one culture, whereas a kind of sexual harassment in another. It would be of less significance theoretically or practically to discuss Chinese and Western

14、intercultural love twenty or thirty years ago, because there was little to no opportunity to have intercultural romance. However, in the 21 st century our world has become a global village due to the rapid development oftechnologies of transportation and information. The two cultures actively partic

15、ipate in oneanothers lives through business as the result. Globalization has made the world a melting pot,with people carrying all different kinds of cultures across what once were physical boundaries.Being involved in an intercultural romance or intercultural marriage has become fashionable.Cultura

16、l differences always cause misunderstandings and conflicts between the parties involved in an intercultural romance.
