1、As a well-preserved private garden built in 1818 in the Qing Dynasty, Ge yuan is one of the key cultural sites that are under protection. A businessmen named Huang Zhi-yun being its owner, the garden got its name for the reason that the owner loved bamboos, the shape of whose leaves resemble that of

2、 Chinese character “个”. The garden wins its fame for its being small and exquisite, elegant and unique, and it is well-known especially for the piled stones. At the gate of the garden, there are square parterres on both sides. Though not many, the bamboos are tall and straight, piercing into the sky

3、. Artificial bamboo shoots, long or short, contrast finely with the bamboos, and spring is evident right here. Entering the gate, we may see the irregular parterres on both sides of a winding path, and they are ornamented with lake stones of various shapes, vividly and distantly.The hall named “Yi Y

4、u Xuan” wins our admiration because it is spacious, bright, and of primitive simplicity. The original name for the hall is “the Osmanthus Hall” or “the Open Hall”, and this is the place where the owner used to entertain his guests. Being located in the center of the garden, the hall is surrounded by

5、 rockworks all year round, and it matches its name with its unique architectural structure and the open windows on four sides (The name Yi Yu Xuan means “a Place suitable to enjoy the rain”).Turning to the west, were to enjoy the summer hill. When seen from afar, the Hill is like a stone-made house,

6、 and with the stones in the Tai Lake, the Summer Hill is made small and exquisite. A hidden stone path winds towards the top of the hill, where there is a crack resembling a small skylight. Artificial stone bamboo shoots hang from the roof of the cave, and they amaze the visitors with their quietnes

7、s and their beauty. People cannot help wondering why such a delicate hill with swaying vines in the background and lotus flowers and red fishes in the limpid pond is called “the Summer Hill”? The reason is that the scenery is meant to imitate the clouds in the summer sky, so the piled stones are emp

8、loyed to impress the visitors with their “wrinkles and leaks, thinness and transparency”, in order that the feeling of constant changes be acquired when the hill is observed from different perspectives. Cranes used to be kept in a pavilion on the top of the hill with the implication of “here being a

9、 fairy place of happiness where cranes dance in the clouds.” This scenic spot is fairly typical of elegancy of the South, and it is characterized with its beautiful stones and waters. A winding stone bridge disappears in the heart of the hill, and it is so magic that the visitors immediately feel br

10、ight and open-hearted at the sight of it. There are thirteen caves in the Summer Hill, and we may enjoy a different picture when we look out of a different cave. The stones here are piled in the idea that “there might be thousands of stones, and the sequence is what must always be kept”. In a word,

11、here is a cool world with grayish stones, pleasant shade, deep caves, and rippling waters, where a heavy rain has just stopped and changing clouds could be seen.Right beside the Summer Hill is the main building of the garden: Bao Shan Lou, meaning “a pavilion embracing the hills.” The two-storeyed p

12、avilion, 45.8 meters in length, faces the south and looks rather splendid with its upturned eaves. As a place where the family used to enjoy the scenery, the pavilion functions as a bridge between the Summer Hill and the Autumn Hill, and people unconsciously enter into “the autumn” while they are wa

13、lking leisurely on the wide long corridor.As the most picturesque spot, the Autumn Hill is made of piled yellow stones. With its great boldness, the hill is remarkable for its fantastic three-dimensional transportation. Starting from the bottom of the hill, the visitors are to go through bumpy paths

14、, streams, and valleys, and new views keep appearing before the eyes. Crafty caves, which are characterized with the vigorous style of the North, serve as an ornament for the peaks of the Hill. For instance, the middle peak, the highest peak with its towering cliffs, contains three caves: the upper

15、one, the middle one, and the lower one. Among them, the middle cave deserves its name of “The cave of the Immortal”, and the visitors may enjoy to the full the grand sight by stepping up the platform and standing side by side with the clouds. With the heroic posture and winding paths, the Autumn Hil

16、l is regarded as the climax of the garden. It is said that the Hill was produced by SHI Tao, a painter, who was a master of the scenery of Huangshan, and this is why the Autumn Hill resembles Huangshan in the romantic charm. The shadow of the cliffs in the middle peak reminds us of the picture of a waterfall, and this, in the art of gardening, is called “waters against dry hills”.
