The problem is, of course,not the Cadillac or any other automobiles themselves, but is the distortionof human values and the sacrifice of a greater good to a lesser one.Holden opposes material values because they draw on what little store oflove there is in the world and “expend it on thing in

One of the obstacles is Holdens oral-interpretation class.Holden has failed the course because he rejects rules that prohibitdigression, while he defends such a digression in a discussion with hisformer E

13、nglish teacher Mr. Antolini. “Holdens digressions have a moreimportant thematic function: they demonstrate consistently his preferencefor people, his sensitivity to human suffering, and his love.“ WhatHolden actually means is that he likes digression because it moves thefocus from “things“ to the pl

Human beings are much more

Holden rejects many things, but he is notnihilistic. “Human“ is one of his values, as he reveals comically in hispreference for the horse over the sacred automobile: “A horse is at leasthuman for Gods sake“. He found it “dirty“ that students yelled atKinsella, who was “all nice and excited“(191) in expressing concern forhis uncle. Holden refuses to join in the chorus of cold, blood-curding“Digression!“ in order to soothe the pain of his loneliness and alienation.Holden also used the word “dirty“ to express his hatred for the six bo
