With the deep hunger of an Irishman who has been a tenant on the lands his people once had owned and hunted, he wanted to see h

2、is own acres stretching green before his eyes, with a ruthless singleness of purpose, he desired his own house, his own plantation, his own horses, his own slaves. And there in this new country, safe from the twin perils of the land he had lefttaxation that ate up crops and barns and the ever presen

3、t threat of suddun confisca tionhe intended to have them.Gerald was likeable, and the neighbors learned in time what the children, negroes and dogs discovered at first sight, take a kind heart, a ready and sympathetic ear and an open pocket-book lurked just behind his bawling voice and his truculent

4、 manner.Ellens life was not easy, nor was it happy, but she did not expect life to be easy, and, if it was not happy, that was womens lot. It was a mans world, and she accepted it as such. The man owned the property, and the women managed it. The man took the credit for the management, and the women

5、 praised his cleverness. The man roared like a bull when a splinter was in his finger, and the woman muffled the moans of childbirth, lest she disturb him. Men were rough of speech and often drunk. Women ignored the lapses of speech and put the drunkards to bed without bitter words. Men were rude an

6、d outspoken; women were always kind, gracious and forgiving.To Mammys indignation, her preferred playmates were not her demure sisters or the well brought-up Wilks girls but the negro children on the plantation and the boys of the neighborhood, and she could climb a tree or throw a rock as well as a

7、ny of them. Mammy was greatly perturbed that Ellens daughter should display such traits and frequently adjured her to ack lak a Iii lady. But Ellen took a more tolerant and long-sighted view of the matter she knew that from childhood playmates grew beaux in later years, and the first duty of a girl

8、was to get married. She told herself that the child was merely full of life and there was still time in which to teach her the arts and graces of being attractive to men.Impression of this chapter:This chapter is mainly about the different backgrounds where Scarletts father and mother were from. Bot

9、h of them had a piece of history, which made them become Gerald and Ellen.From the first paragraph digested, we can see what a plantation lover Gerald was. He desired everything about a plantation, as it mentioned before: in Geralds opinion, Land is the only thing worth working for, worth fighting f

10、orworth dying for. Which showed a widespread belief in land of the major south American at that time. And it is a foreshadowing that Scarlett inherited this concept and she became stronger to fight for her land in the following story.In this chapter, the author also described Gerald, Scarletts fathe

11、r, an Irishmans character. At first sight, the neighbors might thought that this new comer was rude, bawling and truculent, as time went by, they found Gerald had a kind heart, a ready and sympathetic ear and an open pocket-book as written in the second paragraph digested. In a word, Scarletts fathe

12、r was likeable, which influenced Scarletts behavior in public, even though Geralds most pretty daughter, Scarlett herself, thought how silly it could be.On the other hand, Scarletts mother, Ellen, was different from Gerald. Ellen was a coast aristocrat of French descent, who had been reared in the t

13、radition of great ladies, which had taught her how to carry her burden and still retain hr charm. As the author wrote in the third paragraph digested, Ellen learned to be a traditional, graceful woman since she was a little girl. This is the other widespread concept about men and women at that time:

14、 It was a mans world, women had to accept it even if life was not easy or happy.So, now we might see why Scarlett had such charm in her personality. Ellen intended that her three daughters should be great ladies, But Scarlett, child of Gerald, found the road to lady hood hard. Including to the fourt

15、h paragraph digested, Scarlett grew up like a boy, which made her mammy upset, but Ellen still had faith in her. When Scarlett was a child, she had confused her mother with the Virgin Mary, and now that she was older she saw no reason for changing her opinion. Hard as Scarlett tried, she never could

16、 be a true lady just like her mother, maybe it was because her veins was going though her fathers wildful blood.From this chapter, we can see that no ones character would come from nowhere. By describing Scarletts parents, its much easier for the readers to understand what a girl Scarlett exactly was.Besides, as novel based on a particular piece of history, Margaret showed us some concepts in that history by telling some details about peo
