11、er) Graphene and Other Two-Dimensional Atomic Crystals (2003 - present). In 2004, Geims group has reported a new class of materials free-standing two-dimensional crystals including graphene (isolated atomic plane of graphite). Unexpectedly, these one-atom-thick sheets (essentially gigantic 2D molecu

12、les) appear to be stable under ambient conditions, exhibit high crystal and electronic quality and are continuous on a macroscopic scale. Graphene has become one of the hottest research topics, and Geim is not only the founder of the area but remains one of its leaders. There is no doubt about the e

13、xceptional new science that graphene continues to bring. In the last two years, a cornucopia of graphene applications has also emerged. Optimists believe it is the beginning of the carbon age, pessimists say only that the impact will be somewhat smaller. Two spin-off companies (Graphene Industries L
