Last but not least, I would like to express my thanks to all those who have helped me in the completion of this thesis. ii Abstract With the development of multimedia technology and the wide spread of computers, videos in the

6、target language are widely used in second language teaching classrooms. Many researches on listening to videotext have found that subtitles can help learners identify words in the video, enhance their comprehension of the content and memorize the lines of the video. But there is still no consensus o

7、n the application of source language subtitles and target language subtitles in multimedia environment. This study tries to investigate the effects of Chinese and English subtitles on English learners mastery of word meaning by conducting an experiment, attempting to answer the following research qu

8、estions: 1. What are the attitudes that the subjects hold towards the watching experience with English subtitles or Chinese subtitles? What are their opinions about the effects of subtitles on their vocabulary learning? 2. Do Chinese and English subtitles have different impacts on learners vocabular

9、y acquisition when they watch the same video segments? If so, what are the differences? 1) Do the subjects watching English-subtitled videos perform differently from those who watch the same videos with Chinese subtitles in meaning guess tests? 2) Do the subjects watching English-subtitled videos pe

10、rform differently from those who watch the same videos with Chinese subtitles in word recognition tests? Thirty-six students majoring in English, most of whom are sophomores, attended this experiment. After watching two English video segments, the subjects were asked to do the meaning guess test, th

11、e word recognition test and a questionnaire. The data collected were carefully analyzed. The research findings are summarized as follows: 1. Most of the learners show a positive attitude towards watching videos with subtitles, especially English subtitles. They feel that Chinese subtitles can enhanc

12、e iii their comprehension of the videos, but they are easy to be distracted from the audio. They tend to listen to the audio when watching videos with English subtitles. They feel that they can learn more words through this watching experience. 2. Chinese subtitles and English subtitles have differe

13、nt impacts on learners vocabulary acquisition: 1) Chinese subtitles can help learners perform better in meaning guess tests. They give limited help to learners to get the correct meanings of more words and expressions which they are not familiar with, but they may help learners find the apt explanat

14、ion to the given unfamiliar word or expression that they can identify from the video. 2) English subtitles can help learners perform better in word recognition tests. They can help learners identify the word or expression from the speech to get its specific meaning in the video. But English subtitle

15、s do not guarantee learners success in word recognition, because the frequency of given word and learners ability to get information from the pictures also affect their performance. Chinese and English subtitles offer different help to English learning. It is recommended that teachers and learners s

16、hould choose the subtitles of different languages according to their instructional objectives. Key words: vocabulary acquisition, Chinese subtitles, English subtitles, meaning guess test, word recognition test iv 摘摘 要要 由于多媒体技术的发展和计算机的广泛应用,视听资料越来越广泛地运用于 二语教学中。相关研究发现,在观看原声影片时,使用字幕可以帮助学习者辨识 影片中出现的词汇,增强对内容的理解,记忆影片中出现过的话语。然而到底是 选用源语言字幕,还是使用标的语字幕,又或是不使用字幕,这在外语教学界一 直有争议。本文作者试图通过实证研究,探究中英文字幕对英语学习者词汇意义 掌握的影响,回答以下几个问题: 1. 学习者对观看两种字幕有何看法?他们认为中英字幕对词汇习得有何影 响? 2. 中英文字幕对学习者词汇习得有没有不同影响?如果有,不同在哪里? 1
