22、yofmentionareWilliamJames,anAmericanpsychologistfamousforhistheoryof“streamofconscious,”andCarlJung,aSwisspsychiatrist,notedforhis“collectiveunconscious”and“archetypalsymbol”aspartofmodernmythology.nThe20th.centurybeganwithastrongsenseofsocialbreakdown.AseriesofwarsfoughtontheinternationalsceneduringthefirstpartofthecenturyweretoaffectthelifeoftheAmericansandtheirliterarywritings.Amongthem,thetwoworldwars,especiallytheFirstWorldWar(1914-1918),becametheemblemofallwarsinthe20th.c.whichmeansviolence,devastation,bloodanddeath.
