1、TED演讲-拖延症-PPTIncollege,Iwasagovernmentmajor,whichmeansIhadtowritealotofpapers.Now,whenanormalstudentwritesapaper,theymightspreadtheworkoutalittlelikethis.andsowewerehere.Andthentwomonthsturnedintoonemonth,whichturnedintotwoweeks.AndonedayIwokeupwiththreedaysuntilthedeadline,stillnothavingwrittenawor

2、d,andsoIdidtheonlythingIcould:Iwrote90pagesover72hours,pullingnotonebuttwoall-nighters-gotitinjustatthedeadline.Anyway,todayImawriter-bloggerguy.Andacoupleofyearsago,Idecidedtowriteaboutprocrastination.Now,Ihadahypothesisthatthebrainsofprocrastinatorswereactuallydifferentthanthebrainsofotherpeople.I

3、actuallybroughtthemheretoshowyoutoday.Soheresthebrainofanon-procrastinatorNow.heresmybrain.Thereisadifference.BothbrainshaveaRationalDecision-Makerinthem,buttheprocrastinatorsbrainalsohasanInstantGratificationMonkey.Now,whatdoesthismeanfortheprocrastinator?Well,itmeanseverythingsfineuntilthishappens

4、.SotheRationalDecision-Makerwillmaketherationaldecisiontodosomethingproductive,buttheMonkeydoesntlikethatplan,soheactuallytakesthewheel,Thenweregoingtogoovertothefridge,toseeiftheresanythingnewintheresince10minutesago.Afterthat,weregoingtogoonaYouTubespiralthatstartswithvideosofRichardFeynmantalking

5、aboutmagnetsandendsmuch,muchlaterwithuswatchinginterviewswithJustinBiebersmom.Allofthatsgoingtotakeawhile,sowerenotgoingtoreallyhaveroomonthescheduleforanyworktoday.Now,whatisgoingonhere?TheInstantGratificationMonkeydoesnotseemlikeaguyyouwantbehindthewheel.Helivesentirelyinthepresentmoment.Hehasnome

6、moryofthepast,noknowledgeofthefuture,andheonlycaresabouttwothings:easyandfun.Now,intheanimalworld,thatworksfine.AndtotheMonkey,humansarejustanotheranimalspecies.Youhavetokeepwell-slept,well-fedandpropagatingintothenextgeneration,whichintribaltimesmighthaveworkedOK.But,ifyouhaventnoticed,nowwerenotin

7、tribaltimes.Wereinanadvancedcivilization,andtheMonkeydoesnotknowwhatthatis.Whichiswhywehaveanotherguyinourbrain,theRationalDecision-Maker,whogivesustheabilitytodothingsnootheranimalcando.Wecanmakelong-termplans.Andhewantstotakeallofthatintoaccount.Andhewantstojusthaveusdowhatevermakessensetobedoingr

8、ightnow.Now,sometimesitmakessensetobedoingthingsthatareeasyandfun,likewhenyourehavingdinnerorgoingtobedorenjoyingwell-earnedleisuretime.Thatswhytheresanoverlap.Sometimestheyagree.Butothertimes,itmakesmuchmoresensetobedoingthingsthatareharderandlesspleasant,forthesakeofthebigpicture.Andthatswhenwehav

9、eaconflict.Andfortheprocrastinator,thatconflicttendstoendacertainwayeverytime,leavinghimspendingalotoftimeinthisorangezone,aneasyandfunplacethatsentirelyoutoftheMakesSensecircle.IcallittheDarkPlayground.Now,theDarkPlaygroundisaplacethatallofyouprocrastinatorsoutthereknowverywell.Itswhereleisureactiv

10、itieshappenattimeswhenleisureactivitiesarenotsupposedtobehappening.ThefunyouhaveintheDarkPlaygroundisntactuallyfun,becauseitscompletelyunearned,andtheairisfilledwithguilt,dread,anxiety,self-hatred-allofthosegoodprocrastinatorfeelings.Andthequestionis,inthissituation,withtheMonkeybehindthewheel,howdo

11、estheprocrastinatorevergethimselfoverheretothisbluezone,alesspleasantplace,butwherereallyimportantthingshappen?Well,turnsouttheprocrastinatorhasaguardianangel,someonewhosalwayslookingdownonhimandwatchingoverhiminhisdarkestmomentssomeonecalledthePanicMonster.Now,thePanicMonsterisdormantmostofthetime,

12、buthesuddenlywakesupanytimeadeadlinegetstoocloseortheresdangerofpublicembarrassment,acareerdisasterorsomeotherscaryconsequence.Andimportantly,hestheonlythingtheMonkeyisterrifiedof.Now,hebecameveryrelevantinmylifeprettyrecently,becausethepeopleofTEDreachedouttomeaboutsixmonthsagoandinvitedmetodoaTEDT

13、alk.Now,ofcourse,Isaidyes.ItsalwaysbeenadreamofminetohavedoneaTEDTalkinthepast.Sothatswhatwedidthatday.Assixmonthsturnedintofourandthentwoandthenone,thepeopleofTEDdecidedtoreleasethespeakers.AndIopenedupthewebsite,andtherewasmyfacestaringrightbackatme.Andguesswhowokeup?SothePanicMonsterstartslosingh

14、ismind,andafewsecondslater,thewholesystemsinmayhemAndtheMonkey-remember,hesterrifiedofthePanicMonster-boom,hesupthetree!Andfinally,finally,theRationalDecision-MakercantakethewheelandIcanstartworkingonthetalk.Andthisentiresituation,withthethreecharacters-thisistheprocrastinatorssystem.Itsnotpretty,bu

15、tintheend,itworks.ThisiswhatIdecidedtowriteaboutontheblogacoupleofyearsago.WhenIdid,Iwasamazedbytheresponse.Literallythousandsofemailscamein,fromalldifferentkindsofpeoplefromallovertheworld,doingalldifferentkindsofthings.Thesearepeoplewhowerenurses,bankers,painters,engineersandlotsandlotsofPhDstuden

16、ts.Andtheywereallwriting,sayingthesamething:Ihavethisproblemtoo.Butwhatstruckmewasthecontrastbetweenthelighttoneofthepostandtheheavinessoftheseemails.Thesepeoplewerewritingwithintensefrustrationaboutwhatprocrastinationhaddonetotheirlives,aboutwhatthisMonkeyhaddonetothem.AndIthoughtaboutthis,andIsaid

17、,well,iftheprocrastinatorssystemworks,thenwhatsgoingon?Whyareallofthesepeopleinsuchadarkplace?Well,itturnsoutthattherestwokindsofprocrastination.EverythingIvetalkedabouttoday,theexamplesIvegiven,theyallhavedeadlines.Andwhentheresdeadlines,theeffectsofprocrastinationarecontainedtotheshorttermbecauset

18、hePanicMonstergetsinvolved.Buttheresasecondkindofprocrastinationthathappensinsituationswhenthereisnodeadline.Soifyouwantedacareerwhereyoureaself-starter-somethinginthearts,somethingentrepreneurial-theresnodeadlinesonthosethingsatfirst,becausenothingshappening,notuntilyouvegoneoutanddonethehardworkto

19、getmomentum,getthingsgoing.NowiftheprocrastinatorsonlymechanismofdoingthesehardthingsisthePanicMonster,thatsaproblem,becauseinallofthesenon-deadlinesituations,thePanicMonsterdoesntshowup.Hehasnothingtowakeupfor,sotheeffectsofprocrastination,theyrenotcontained;theyjustextendoutwardforever.Anditsthisl

20、ong-termkindofprocrastinationthatsmuchlessvisibleandmuchlesstalkedaboutthanthefunnier,short-termdeadline-basedkind.Itsusuallysufferedquietlyandprivately.Anditcanbethesourceofahugeamountoflong-termunhappiness,andregrets.AndIthought,thatswhythosepeopleareemailing,andthatswhytheyreinsuchabadplace.Itsno

21、tthattheyrecrammingforsomeproject.Itsthatlong-termprocrastinationhasmadethemfeellikeaspectator,attimes,intheirownlives.Thefrustrationisnotthattheycouldntachievetheirdreams;itsthattheywerentevenabletostartchasingthem.SoIreadtheseemailsandIhadalittlebitofanepiphany-thatIdontthinknon-procrastinatorsexi

22、st.Thatsright-Ithinkallofyouareprocrastinators.Now,youmightnotallbeamess,likesomeofus,andsomeofyoumayhaveahealthyrelationshipwithdeadlines,butremember:theMonkeyssneakiesttrickiswhenthedeadlinesarentthere.Now,Iwanttoshowyouonelastthing.IcallthisaLifeCalendar.Thatsoneboxforeveryweekofa90-yearlife.That

23、snotthatmanyboxes,especiallysincewevealreadyusedabunchofthose.SoIthinkweneedtoalltakealong,hardlookatthatcalendar.Weneedtothinkaboutwhatwerereallyprocrastinatingon,becauseeveryoneisprocrastinatingonsomethinginlife.WeneedtostayawareoftheInstantGratificationMonkey.Thatsajobforallofus.Andbecausetheresnotthatmanyboxesonthere,itsajobthatshouldprobablystarttoday.Well,maybenottoday,butknow.Sometimesoon.Thankyou.
