9、somanywillfollow.Wehaveaplace,allofus,inalongstory-astorywecontinue,butwhoseendwewillnotsee.Itisthestoryofanewworldthatbecameafriendandliberatoroftheold,astoryofaslave-holdingsocietythatbecameaservantoffreedom,thestoryofapowerthatwentintotheworldtoprotectbutnotpossess,todefendbutnottoconquer.Itisthe
10、Americanstory-astoryofflawedandfalliblepeople,unitedacrossthegenerationsbygrandandenduringideals.ThegrandestoftheseidealsisanunfoldingAmericanpromisethateveryonebelongs,thateveryonedeservesachance,thatnoinsignificantpersonwaseverborn.Americansarecalledtoenactthispromiseinourlivesandinourlaws.Andthou
11、ghournationhassometimeshalted,andsometimesdelayed,wemustfollownoothercourse.Throughmuchofthelastcentury,Americasfaithinfreedomanddemocracywasarockinaragingsea.Nowitisaseeduponthewind,takingrootinmanynations.Ourdemocraticfaithismorethanthecreedofourcountry,itistheinbornhopeofourhumanity,anidealwecarr
12、ybutdonotown,atrustwebearandpassalong.Andevenafternearly225years,wehavealongwayyettotravel.Whilemanyofourcitizensprosper,othersdoubtthepromise,eventhejustice,ofourowncountry.TheambitionsofsomeAmericansarelimitedbyfailingschoolsandhiddenprejudiceandthecircumstancesoftheirbirth.Andsometimesourdifferen
13、cesrunsodeep,itseemsweshareacontinent,butnotacountry.Wedonotacceptthis,andwewillnotallowit.Ourunity,ourunion,istheseriousworkofleadersandcitizensineverygeneration.Andthisismysolemnpledge：Iwillworktobuildasinglenationofjusticeandopportunity.Iknowthisisinourreachbecauseweareguidedbyapowerlargerthanour
14、selveswhocreatesusequalinHisimage.Andweareconfidentinprinciplesthatuniteandleadusonward.Americahasneverbeenunitedbybloodorbirthorsoil.Weareboundbyidealsthatmoveusbeyondourbackgrounds,liftusaboveourinterestsandteachuswhatitmeanstobecitizens.Everychildmustbetaughttheseprinciples.Everycitizenmustuphold
15、them.Andeveryimmigrant,byembracingtheseideals,makesourcountrymore,notless,American.Today,weaffirmanewcommitmenttoliveoutournationspromisethroughcivility,courage,compassionandcharacter.America,atitsbest,matchesacommitmenttoprinciplewithaconcernforcivility.Acivilsocietydemandsfromeachofusgoodwillandrespect,fairdealingandforgiveness.Someseemtobelievethatourpoliticscanaffordtobepettybecause,inatimeofpeace,thestakesofourdebatesappearsmall.ButthestakesforAmericaareneversmall.Ifourcountrydoesnotleadthecauseoffreedom,itwillnotbeled.Ifwedonotturntheheartsofchild
