1、.Chapter 1. PETER BREAKS THROUGH(1)All children, e*cept one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. One day when she was two years old she was playing in a garden, and she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. I suppose she must have looked r

2、ather delightful, for Mrs. Darling put her hand to her heart and cried, Oh, why cant you remain like this for ever! This was all that passed between them on the subject, but henceforth Wendy knew that she must grow up. You always know after you are two. Two is the beginning of the end.Of course they

3、 lived at 14 their house number on their street, and until Wendy came her mother was the chief one. She was a lovely lady, with a romantic mind and such a sweet mocking mouth. Her romantic mind was like the tiny bo*es, one within the other, that e from the puzzling East, however many you discover th

4、ere is always one more; and her sweet mocking mouth had one kiss on it that Wendy could never get, though there it was, perfectly conspicuous in the right-hand corner.The way Mr. Darling won her was this: the many gentlemen who had been boys when she was a girl discovered simultaneously that they lo

5、ved her, and they all ran to her house to propose to her e*cept Mr. Darling, who took a cab and nipped in first, and so he got her. He got all of her, e*cept the innermost bo* and the kiss. He never knew about the bo*, and in time he gave up trying for the kiss. Wendy thought Napoleon could have got

6、 it, but I can picture him trying, and then going off in a passion, slamming the door.Mr.Darling used to boast to Wendy that her mother not only loved him but respected him.He was one of those deep ones who know about stocks and shares.Of course no one really knows, but he quite seemed to know, and

7、he often said stocks were up and shares were down in a way that would have made any woman respect him.Mrs. Darling was married in white, and at first she kept the books perfectly, almost gleefully, as if it were a game, not so much as a Brussels sprout was missing; but by and by whole cauliflowers d

8、ropped out, and instead of them there were pictures of babies without faces. She drew them when she should have been totting up. They were Mrs. Darlings guesses.Wendy came first, then John, then Michael.For a week or two after Wendy came it was doubtful whether they would be able to keep her, as she

Mr. Darling was frightfully proud of her, but he was very honourable, and he sat on the edge of Mrs. Darlings bed, holding her hand and calculating e*penses, while she looked at him imploringly. She wanted to risk it, e what might, but that was not his way; his way was wi

10、th a pencil and a piece of paper, and if she confused him with suggestions he had to begin at the beginning again.Now dont interrupt, he would beg of her. 15、怪讨人喜欢的,因为,达林太太把手按着胸口,大声说:要是你老是这么大该多好呵!事情的经过就是这样。可是,打那以后,温迪就明白了,她终归是要长大的。人一过两岁就总会知道这一点的。两岁,是个完毕,也是个起点。当然罗,他们是住在门牌十四号的那所宅子里,在温迪来到世上以前,妈妈自然是家中主要人物。她是个招人喜欢的太太,一脑子的梦想;还有一甜甜的、喜欢逗弄人的嘴。她那爱梦想的脑子,就像从神奇的来的那些小盒子,一个套一个,不管你翻开了多少,里面总还藏着一个。她那甜甜的、逗弄人的嘴,老是挂着一个温迪得不到的吻,可那吻明明就在那儿,就在右边的嘴角上挂着。达林先生是这样赢得他太太的:她还是个女孩的时候,周围有好些男孩,他们长成大人以后,突然一齐发现他们爱上了她,于是他们都跑着拥进她家向她求婚;只有达林先生的做法不同,他雇了一辆马车,抢在他们头里来到她家里,于是就赢得了她。达林先生得到了她的一切,只是没有得到她那些小盒子最里面的一只和那个吻。那只小盒子他从来也不知道,那个吻他渐渐地也不再想去求得了。温迪心想,兴许拿破仑能得到那个吻,不过据我估摸,拿破仑必定试图求吻来着,可是过后却怒气冲冲地甩门而去。达林先生时常向温迪夸口说,她妈妈不光爱他,而且敬重他。他是一个学问高深的人,懂得股票和红利什么的。当然啦,这些事谁也搞不清,可达林先生像是挺懂行的,他老是说,股票
