3、nHanDynasty,peoplesimplifiedthesealcharacters,whichhadmanystrokes(笔画),andcreatedtheofficialscript(隶书).Thenewcalligraphyappearstobemuchneater,turningtheroundstyleintoaflatone.Todaysmostpopularandinfluentialwritingstyle,theregularscript,firstcameintobeingbetweentheHanandWeidynasties.Justasthenameimpli

4、es,itfeaturesregularityandvariesfromtheflatfonttoasquareone.TheperiodwhentheregularscriptflourishedmostwasduringtheTangDynasty,whenYanZhenqing(708-784)andLiuGongquan(778-865)successivelyestablishedschoolsoftheirownstyles.Instrikingcontrast,thecursivescript(草书)putsemphasisonflexibility,foritonlymaint

5、ainstheessenceofeachcharacterandexpressesmorepersonalexertion(发挥).Therefore,itsvalueliesmoreinappreciationthaninpracticality.TheSageofCalligraphyWangXizhi(303-361,307-365,or321-379),togetherwithhissonWangXianzhi(344-386),ledtheartofcalligraphytoitssummit.WangXizhiwasamasterofallformsofChinesecalligr

6、aphy,especiallytherunningscript,andisgenerallyrecognizedasthegreatestChinesecalligrapherinhistory.Peopleplacedgreatvalueonhiscalligraphicworks,comparinghishandwritingtoaflyingdragon,vigorousyetelegant.HisprefacetothepoemscollectedfromTheOrchidParilion,knownasagem(瑰宝)ofChinesecalligraphy,wasthemostre
