While driving a car through an Italian territory and war zone, he was wounded by shrapnel. During his 20 month stay in the hospital for treatment, 237 pieces of
7、 shrapnel were removed from his legs alone. His serious injury left him with insomnia and post traumatic stress disorder. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out; he rushed to the front as a journalist, and witnessed the life and death in the Spanish Civil War. During World War II, he once again we
8、nt on the entire battlefield as a journalist. In a car accident on the front lines, he got a serious head injury. The wounds were closed with 57 stitches. In the meantime, because of the crash, he had a serious concussion. In 1949, his eye was wounded by a shotgun shell casing. In 1954, while huntin
9、g in Africa, he survived a crash. Ernest Hemingways life was one catastrophe following anothe匚 Although he survived every time, the shadow of death struck fear in his heart. Even minor strange happenings took on undue ominous associations. Even the death of his father, suicide, had a tremendous impa
10、ct on him.Several years later, his mother gave him the revolver with which his father had committed suicide. An accompanying card showed the words, Maybe you want to save it； To this he replied, “I really do not know what this means； (Scott Donaldson, 2000)Those legendary, unique, and complex experi

Furthermore, serious illness further colored his imagination concerning death, which inspires complex neurotic sentiments, as well as religious mystery, to the conceptualization of his death. Its no doubt that death has the greatest measure o
12、f authenticity and realism for Hemingway.Hemingway conceived of death as something that is absolutely inescapable, which is the largest and most horrifying concept in reality. His works have a great mysterious force that deprives people of their rights and tears up their subjective imagination and b
13、lind optimism in the space of a moment. Using myriad literary images, Hemingway wants to convey the truth about this life experience. All mankind is doomed to live on in degradation, setting their hopes and cares aside.The Death Theme and the Stream of ConsciousnessHemingways short stories carry mor
14、e symbolic meaning than his novels. It was his short stories that guaranteed his status as a master therein. His works are pieces of conscious art; the creation of his characters and the description of the environment carry a strong and rather distinct imagery. He said: MThe purpose of writing is to
15、 convey to the readers every feeling, vision, place and emotion.n(Yu Ye, 2004) In fact, as long as you read his works carefully, the focus of his short stories will be found to share a common point. First, his works resort to the readers senses so that readers could feel and hear what he writes and
16、produce a strong impression in order to let the reader enjoy the feeling of immersive, confusing, dramatic narration. This was accomplished by omitting illustrative tips and also hiding the subjective motive behind fictional dialogue.
