4、es,Practice Training,Skill Training,Summary of Project,Skill Objective,商务英语函电 Unit 11 Shipment,B/L bill of lading Definition: Bill of lading, means a document which evidences a contract of carriage by sea and the taking over or loading of the goods by the carrier, and by which the carrier undertakes

5、 to deliver the goods against surrender of the document. A provision in the document that the goods are to be delivered to the order of a named person, or to order, or to bearer, constitutes such an undertaking. Functions of a B/L: 1It is a receipt, i.e. an acknowledgement that the goods have been l

6、oaded (or received for shipment); 2It contains or evidences the terms of the contract of carriage; 3It serves as a prima facie document of title to the goods. Contents of a B/L: The B/L must contains the following information: 1Name of the shipping company; 2A National Flag;,Knowledge Objective,Skil

It indicates that the goods were received without any damage, irregularities or short shipment. Usua

9、lly the words “clean on board” and “apparent good order and condition” will appear on the B/L. (2) Unclean bill of lading or Foul bill of lading. It indicates that the goods were received with damages, irregularities or short shipment. And the captain will add “unclean on board” on the B/L. Generall

10、y speaking, such B/L will not be accepted by the banks. (3) Short form Bill of lading. It indicates that the terms and conditions of the carriage will not be added to the back of the B/L. In the long form bill of lading the terms and conditions of the carriage will be printed on the blank back of

12、the bill of lading. It is widely used in the international ocean transportation. (5) Straight bill of lading. In this type importer/consignee/agent is named in the bill of lading. It is a document, in which a seller agrees to use a certain transportation to ship a good to a certain location, where t

13、he bill assigned to a certain party. It details to the quality and quantity of goods. (6) Order bill of lading. This bill uses express words to make the bill negotiable, e.g. it states that delivery is to be made to the further order of the consignee using words such as “delivery to A Ltd.” or “to o
