1、SPACE MeetingJanuary 11, 2006Present: Katie Soule, Michelle Calderon, Linda Kalasinski, Margaret Fisher, Kathy Cieszynski, Maureen Caccavale, Claire Houlihan, Morena Rizzuto, Linda Plemenik, Sarah Crounse.Meeting called to order at 7:15pmNew members welcomed. Membership and benefits reviewed. Annual

2、 dues $20 for SPACE. Members are invited to join AGATE and can pay dues directly to AGATE. Membership in AGATE includes subscription to AGATE newsletter. More information about SPACE membership and AGATE on the SPACE website. Anyone who signs up for AGATE membership should notify SPACE secretary so

3、that SPACE can receive credit. Reviewed copying costs and suggestions were solicited on ways to off-set copying costs. Formal thanks given to Todd Plemenik of Frank and Sons Body Works for donating the funds for copying the Googol of Games flyers. Googol of Games discussed, including number of child

4、ren currently enrolled. At the present, there are approximately 10 children each for the Sacandaga and Glen-Worden events. The maximum identified is 30 per site. Helpers for the Googol include several high school students as well as SPACE members.Thanks to Maureen Caccavale for creating the Passport

5、 which the children will use during this and future Googols. Group discussion about how to incorporate categories into the passport. Parents are being instructed to bring in a small photo to affix to the passport. Linda will have a digital camera and printer on hand in the event children do not brin

6、g a photo. The final categories for the passport are: games never played; word games; numbers games; lateral thinking games; and other. Sarah has purchased pencils with the SPACE website printed on them. Distributed one pencil to each attendee and identified that these could be used potentially as p

7、rizes for Googol of Games. Reviewed current collective inventory of games. We have assigned levels to each game to further organize the event. There will be an adequate number of games for each of the three levels. An information table will be available at each respective Googol and will include SPA

8、CE brochures, a sign in sheet where parents can add their email address and a “brain” to which people can make monetary contributions to SPACE. Claire is working out the specifics for the “brain”. Group consensus that another Googol should be targeted for March. Will revisit issue after this Googol.

9、 Claire identified that Lincoln has opened a family resource room for parents and preschoolers. This resource room will be available during the morning hours. A brochure should be coming home soon via the schools. Kindergarten screenings are coming up. It may be beneficial to have SPACE brochures av

10、ailable for incoming Kindergarten parents to pick up during the screenings. Discussed the current use of SPACE email list. Suggestions were made that it may be cost effective and potentially beneficial to membership numbers to include non paying interested parties in emails. Concern about minimizing

11、 the benefit of paying dues if non paying individuals are provided the same information. Sarah will create a separate email group for paying members and interested individuals. We will include an option to decline receipt of future emails. Copying noted as being a potential barrier in terms of cost.

12、 Several suggestions were made about investigating potential of utilizing district copiers and providing our own paper. Will revisit this issue with Susan Swartz and possibly draft a letter to formally request this as an option. Also reviewed potential for obtaining sponsors and giving sponsorship c

13、redit on publications/brochures and for events. Reminder that Bonnie Cook will be presenting on February 1 at the MS LGI. Sage Flyers provided. Attendees encouraged to utilize the offerings of SAGE. Teacher Recognition Award presented as a potential way of identifying specific individuals and their

14、contributions to gifted and talented issues. Will need to formalize the criteria for nominations and selection. Group discussed options such as an essay by the nominating individual or a bullet list to be submitted. This will be something that we continue to discuss and possibly implement towards th

15、e end of the year. Sarah will be working on a brief set of descriptors for the award to get the planning process started. Discussed potential benefits to district parents of SPACE hosting a quarterly open meeting whereby parents can come and discuss specific issues related to high achieving children

16、 and share ideas with other parents who have experienced similar issues. Claire presented the One County, One Book program hosted by the Library. There is a meeting on 1/12 at 3:15pm and anyone interested in accompanying her is welcome. Karen Bradley is involved with this program through her position at the Library.
