5、ntlytakenatripheretoChina,andtheywereburstingwithexcitement.Theywereeagertotellmeabouteverythingaboutwhattheyhadseen.Buttheyadmittedthatbeforetheirtrip,theyhadallkindsofmisconceptionsaboutChina.Theythoughttheywouldseepalacesandtempleseverywheretheywent,butinsteadtheyfoundmassivecitiesfilledwithskysc
6、rapers.TheywerentsurethattheydlikethefoodhereinChina,buttheyactuallylovedit,andtheylearnedhowtousechopsticks.Andintheend,oneofthestudentstoldme-andthisishisquote-hesaid,“Cominghomewasreallyexciting,butwasatthesametimesad.”Now,meetingthesestudentsremindedmethatwhenwelivesofarawayfromeachother,itseasy
7、todevelopallkindsofmisconceptionsandstereotypes.Itseasytofocusonourdifferences-howwespeakdifferentlanguagesandeatdifferentfoodsandobservedifferenttraditions.ButasItraveltheworld,andImeetyoungpeoplefromsomanycountries,Imalwaysstruckbyhowmuchmorewehaveincommon.Andthatsbeenparticularlytrueduringmyvisit
8、hereinChina.Yousee,thetruthisthatIgrewuplikemanyofyou.Mymom,mydad,mybrotherandI,welivedinatinyapartmentinChicago,whichisoneofthelargestcitiesinAmerica.Myfatherworkedatthelocalwaterplant.Andwedidnthavemuchmoney,butourlittlehomewasburstingwithlove.Everyevening,myfamilywouldlaughandsharestoriesoverdinn
9、er.Wedplaycardgamesandhavefunforhours.Andonsummernights,Iremember,whenourapartmentgottoohot,wedallsleepoutsideonourbackporch.Familymeanteverythingtous,includingourextendedfamily.Mygrandparentslivednearby,andmyelderlygreatauntandunclelivedintheapartmentdownstairsfromus.Andwhentheirhealthstartedtodecl
10、inemyparentssteppedin,helpingmyuncleshaveanddresseachmorning,dashingdownstairsinthemiddleofthenighttocheckonmyaunt.Soinmyfamily,likeinsomanyofyourfamilies,wetookcareofeachother.Andwhilewecertainlywerentrich,myparentshadbigdreamsformeandmybrother.Theyhadonlyahighschooleducationthemselves,buttheywered
11、eterminedtosendusbothtouniversities.Sotheypouredalloftheirloveandalloftheirhopeintous,andtheyworkedhard.Theysavedeverypenny.AndIknowthatwasnteasyforthem,especiallyformyfather.Yousee,myfatherhadaseriousillnesscalledmultiplesclerosis.Andashegotsicker,itgotharderforhimtowalk,andittookhimlongertogetdres
12、sedinthemorning.Butnomatterhowtiredhefelt,nomatterhowmuchpainhewasin,myfatherhardlyevermissedadayofwork,becausehewasdeterminedtogivemeandmybrotherabetterlife.Andeveryday,likesomanyofyou,Ifelttheweightofmyparentssacrificesonmyshoulders.Everyday,Iwantedtomakethemproud.SowhilemostAmericankidsattendpubl
13、icschoolsneartheirhomes,whenitwastimeformetoattendhighschool,ItookanexamandgotintoaspecialpublichighschoolwhereIcouldgetabettereducation.Buttheschoolwasveryfarfrommyhome,soIhadtogetupearlyeverymorningandrideabusforanhour,sometimesanhourandahalfiftheweatherwasbad.Andeveryafternoon,Idridethatsamebusba
14、ckhomeandthenimmediatelystartmyhomework,oftenstudyinglateintothenight-andsometimesIwouldwakeupat4:30or5:00inthemorningtostudyevenmore.Anditwasnteasy.ButwheneverIgottiredordiscouraged,Iwouldjustthinkabouthowhardmyparentswereworkingforme.AndIwouldremembersomethingmymotheralwaystoldme-shesaid:“Agoodedu
15、cationissomethingthatnoonecantakeawayfromyou.”Andwhenitwastimeformetoapplytouniversity,Ihadmanyoptions,becauseinAmerica,therearemanykindsofuniversities.Therearefour-yearuniversities.Therearetwo-yearcommunitycollegeswhicharelessexpensive.Thereareuniversitieswhereyoutakeclassesatnightwhileworkingduringtheday.Soyoudonthavetobeatopstudenttoattendauniversity.Andevenifyourparentsdonthavemuchmoneyoryouliveinatinytowninaruralarea,inAmerica,youcanstillattendu
