6、meetwithheadsofstate.Wealsocometoschoolslikethisonetomeetwithstudentslikeyou.Becausewebelievethatrelationshipsbetweennationsarenotjustaboutrelationshipbetweengovernmentsorleaderstheyreaboutrelationshipsbetweenpeople,particularlyouryoungpeople.Soweviewstudyabroadprogramsnotjustasaneducationalopportun
7、ityforstudentsbutalsoasavitalpartofAmericasforeignpolicy.Yousee,throughthewondersofmoderntechnology,ourworldismoreconnectedthaneverbefore.Ideascancrossoceanwiththeclickofabutton.Companiescandobusinessandcompletewithcompaniesacrosstheglobe.Andwecantext,emailandskypewithpeopleoneverycontinent.Sostudyi
8、ngabroadisntjustafunwaytospendasemester-itsquicklybecomingthekeytosuccessinourglobaleconomy.Becausegettingaheadintodaysworkplacesisntjustaboutgettinggoodgradesortestscoresinschoolitsalsoabouthavingrealexperiencewiththeworldbeyondyourborders-experiencewithlanguages,culturesandsocietiesverydifferentfr
9、omyourown.Or,astheChinesesayinggoes:“Itisbettertotraveltenthousandmilesthantoreadtenthousandbooks.”Butletsbeclear,studyingabroadisaboutsomuchmorethanimprovingyourownfuture-itsalsoaboutshapingthefutureofyourcountriesandoftheworldweallshare.Becausewhenitcomestothedefiningchallengesofourtime-whetherits
10、climatechange,oreconomicopportunity,orthespreadofnuclearweapons.thesearesharedchallenges.Noonecountrycanconfrontthemalone.theonlywayforwardistogether.Thatswhyitssoimportantforyoungpeoplelikeyoutoliveandstudyineachotherscountries.Becausethatshowyoudevelopthathabitofcooperation-youdoitbyimprovingyours
11、elfinsomeonesculturebylearningeachothersstoriesandbygettingpastthestereotypesandmisconceptionsthattoooftendivideus.Thatshowyoucometounderstandhowmuchweallshare.Andthatshowyourealizethatweallhaveastakeineachotherssuccess-thatcuresdiscoveredhereinBeijingcouldsavelivesinAmericathecleanenergytechnologie
12、sfromSiliconValleyinCaliforniacouldimprovetheenvironmenthereinChinathatthearchitectureofanancienttempleinXiancouldinspirethedesignofnewbuildingsinDallasorDetroit.Andthatswhentheconnectionsyoumakeasclassmatesorlabmatescanblossomintosomethingmore.ThatswhathappenedwhenAbigailCoplinbecameanAmericanFulbr
13、ightScholarhereatPekingUniversity.Sheandhercolleaguespublishedpaperstogetherintopsciencejournalsandtheybothresearchpartnershipsthatlastedlongaftertheyreturnedtotheirhomecountries.ProfessorNiuKefromPekingUniversitywasFulbrightScholarintheU.S.lastyear，andhereported,andIquote,“themostmemorableexperienc
14、ewerewithmyAmericanfriends.”TheselastingbondsrepresentthetruevalueofstudyingabroadandIamthrilledthatmoreandmorestudentsaregettingthisopportunity.ChinaiscurrentlythefifthmostpopulardestinationforAmericansstudyingabroad.Andtoday,thehighestnumberofexchangestudentsinthearefromChina.Butstill,toomanystude
15、ntsneverhavethischanceandsomethatdoarehesitanttotakeit.Theymayfeellikestudyabroadisonlyforwealthystudents,orstudentsfromcertainkindsofuniversities.Ortheymaythinktothemselves:“Well,thatsoundsfun,buthowwillitreallybeusefulinmylife?”Iunderstandwheretheseyoungpeoplearecomingfrom,becauseIfeltthesamewaywh
