Silently , Pompeii sat in the shadow of Vesuvius and I could almost hear the streets crowded with the people shouting and chatting . I could smell th

14、e fresh bread and see groups of men in ancient clothes gathering on the small path leading to the square . I felt as if Id stepped back in time .Looking down on the once ash-covered streets of Pompeii I was amazed to see carvings (雕刻品) for direction which led the people through the town . Chariots (

15、双轮战车) that had once been led by fine horses had left their marks forever in the cobblestone streets . I saw homes of farmers and homes of the rich . Great bath houses stood in the shadow of time . Truly a wonderful experience . Although it had been many years since that sad time in history when Vesu

16、vius blew its top and threw fire and volcanic ash down onto the city , tears still stung (刺痛) my eyes when I saw the casts(模型) that were made from the cavities(中空处) of people left still in time . Fear was forever frozen on their faces as if it were yesterday . We were able to visit many great cities of Italy , but I will always treasure my visit to Pompeii , Italy and I will go back there , someday .1. What destroyed the beautiful
