Anyone who has searched for a job fresh out of college knows how difficult it is to get that first job. Sending out hundreds of resumes, only to get a few interviews in the end if youre lucky! and if youre VERY lucky, eventually theres a job offer on the table.

Should you take it, or wait for something better to e along the way? It depends on whether you are a “ _ximizer” or a “satisfi _r,”. Maximizers want to explore every possible option before buying

They gather every stick of infor _tion in the hope of _ the best possible decision, even if they exhaust themselves in the pro _ssand drive themselves _d when they realize, inevitably, theres more infor _tion they missed. If

、 you are a satisfi _r, however, you _ke decisions based on the eviden _ at hand, not all the eviden _ that might possibly exist anywhere ever.

Simply put, satisfi _rs are more likely to cut their job search short and take the first job offer. Maximizers are more likely to continue searching until a better job offer es along. Which type of appr

、oach yields the better payoff? A _ximizer. Specifically, quoting the results of a study of the job search of 548 members of the Class of xx by Sheena Iyengar, Rachael Wells, and Barry Schwartz, the _ximizers put themselves through more contortions in the job hunt. They appli

、ed to twenty jobs, on average, while satisfi _rs applied to only ten, and they were significantly more likely to _ke use of outside sour _s of infor _tion and support. But it turned out to be worth it: the job offers they got were significantly better, in terms of salary, than what the satisfi _rs g

、ot. Satisfi _rs were offered jobs with an average starting salary of $37,085; the average starting salary offered to _ximizers was

、$44,515, more than 20 per _nt higher. The trouble is, however, that higher pay doesnt _ke _ximizers a happier group than satisfi _rs. In fact, _ximizers were significantly more likely than satisfi _rs to be unhappy with the offers they aepted

Evidently, being a _ximizer can help you earn more ine, but that ine doesnt buy more happiness, as the _ximizers likely to agonize over the prospect of a better job offer out there he or she missed. Maximizers _y have objectively superior outes, but theyre so busy obsessing about all the things that they could have had, they tend to be less happy with the outes they do get.
