、 EMC Isilon vs. NetApp E-Series CAT One-Pager Competitive Analysis Overview EMC Strategy Isilon provides EMC a pathway into bandwidth and NAS spaces EMC was previously unable to penetrate. Never the less, Isilon further fragments the EMC product line, creating yet another EMC silo. Technology Isilon

、 delivers scale-out file system technology (branded OneFS) and data management software that complements its file system (branded InsightIQ). OneFS was originally designed for large-block sequential workloads, with the release of OneFS 7.1, EMC is now targeting enterprise IT for limited workloads. O

、neFS scales from 3 to 144 nodes; the file system is compute-intensive and delivers very low scaling per node. A principal feature of Isilons file system is expansive containers that enable a single, contiguous namespace 20PB (the current hardware limit with 4TB drives). Although Isilon has iSCSI tar

、get support for its storage controllers, the OneFS 7.1 Web Admin Guide states that, “The iSCSI module is supported by exception only and is limited to certain use cases. It is recommended that you find other solutions for your block storage requirements” Marketed Strengths Operational SimplicityIsil

、on has a simple, accessible user interface; deployment is fast and straightforward; adding nodes to expand performance and capacity is simple (although it can negatively affect performance). Impressive aggregate performanceIsilon can scale workloads over many hardware nodes to deliver impressive aggregate performance, especially for certain typ

、es of sequential workloads. EMC claims 106GB/s throughput with 144 X-400 nodes (EMCs internal benchmarking only). Weaknesses Inefficient, hardware-intensive architecture Isilons single-node performance is weak, and those requiring significant performance will need many nodes and SSDs. HA is based on

、 n-way parity distributed over multiple nodes, requiring a minimum of three nodes. Mixed models can be placed into the same cluster, but require a minimum of 3 equivalence class systems (i.e. 3 X200s or 3 S200s or 3 NL400s) Scaling Isilon capacity always requires additional CPU, cache, ports and SW

、ptimally supported. Never the less, Isilon is now targeting implementations that wish to sprinkle on some enterprise IT. iSCSI is now downplayed by Isilon for “exception only” with EMC recommending other EMC platforms for block storage requirements.
