1、Education SystemHello, everyone! Today Id like to compare the education of China and America. The comparison concerns about 2 parts: education system and college life.Now, lets go to the first parteducation system.American children start school at the age of five. The first year at school is called

2、kindergarten. All American children are required to enroll in this system. The second year at school is considered the first year of primary school. It is called the first grade. Primary school consists of five years of education. Having completed the fifth grade in primary school, American children

3、 advance to secondary school. It usually consists of seven years, from sixth through twelfth grades. The ninth through twelfth grades are referred to as high school. When they complete the twelfth grade, students are awarded a certificate called the high school diploma. In the American education sys

4、tem, students must have obtained a high school diploma before they are admitted into college or university. Then, those who have completed high school and would like to attend university must apply an undergraduate school. Undergraduate schools offer either a two-year degree (called an associate deg

5、ree) or a four-year degree (called a bachelors degree) in a specific course of study. That course of study is called the major. Most schools that offer a four-year degree will admit students who have not yet chosen a major, because all students are required to select one by their second year at scho

6、ol. Students who complete an associate degree can continue their education at a four-year school and eventually complete a bachelor degree.Now lets switch to the education system of China.Its interesting to note that there is no big difference between China and America in the classification of educa

7、tion stage. Both of the two countries have primary education, secondary education and tertiary education. The slight difference of these two systems is that United States has community colleges while China doesnt.However, when we look deep into the two systems, its easy to see the difference.First i

8、s the different university admission requirement between China and America.Everyone sitting in this classroom must have taken the college entrance examination and I believe that most of us regard the preparation period as a tough time in our life. We have to put all our efforts into study during tha

9、t time because we know how critical that exam is in determining which university we will be admitted. However, in America, similar college entrance examinations called ACT and SAT dont mean that much as the exam in China does. In United States, each college has its own criteria for admission. Common

10、 criteria include ACT or SAT scores, extracurricular activities, Grade Point Average, and a general college admissions essay. Students who plan to study in university should not only work hard from the first day of their high school life since all the scores of courses will be counted into GPA, whic

11、h plays a vital role in their college application, but also attend many activities to foster their competence.Thus, we can see that Chinese prefer test-oriented education while Americans appreciate quality-oriented education. This phenomenon is due to the staggering difference in population. The big

12、 number of high school students in China makes it unreliable to accept the America style of admission. Whats more, Chinese education focuses on students command of theoretical knowledge but American education emphasizes the application of knowledge and students leadership. Thats why Chinese think st

13、udents who get high marks are smart guys while Americans judge a good student by taking all of the students quality into account.The second difference is major selection before the college entrance examination. Chinese students always have to listen to their parents suggestion during choosing a majo

14、r. Chinese parents try to persuade their son or daughter to select a major which is easy to find a job with high salary. Therefore, business colleges which offer major of finance, foreign trade, economics etc are always popular in Shanghai these years. However, American parents try to let their chil

15、dren make decision. The Western children choose the college according to their own likes, instead of taking “famous or top college” as the decision factor. Why Chinese parents care so much about their childs choice of major and university? Family structure and their inherent relationships and obliga

16、tions are a major reason. Chinese are family-oriented. Many people worry about their families welfare, reputation, and honor. The educations goal is for earning their living, for honor. But in western countries, children are as equal as any members in the families. Family connections are not so important to most people. Unlike Chinese children, American children dont have duty to repay their parents sacrifices by being successful and supporting
