4、 topic.Keywords: Handbags; wearable computing; aesthetics; user studies.IntroductionMobile computing has become an omnipresent factor in our urban lifestyle, and, in addition to smart phone and tablet form factors, the penetration of wearable computing has started to increase. As well as clothes, di

5、fferent kinds of smart accessories are also part of the emerging wearable computing landscape 5. People carry with them not only smart phones and tablets, but increasingly often, wearable devices such as smart watches and fitness tracker bracelets. Handbags are commonplace objects, which roughly hal

6、f of the adult population, i.e. females, carries when on the move. De facto handbag design has so far been completely free from interactive technology. Yet, due its widely adopted usage and relatively large size, it offers great potential to become a platform for interactive technology. Handbags are

7、 utilitarian items for their functions, but aesthetics play a key factor in their design and desirability. In this paper, we look at the possibilities for smart handbag design using a co- design approach.Smart FashionWhile wearable computing emerges to the mass- market, digitalization of fashion is

8、one of the trends gaining an increasing amount of attention 4. Smart design watches, digital jewellery, and interactive clothing as consumer products already provide examples how aesthetics in wearables design can be integrated into consumer products. In fashion clothing, interactive technology has

9、been demonstrated in unique fashion garments such as Spider Dress1 and Twitter Dress2. Also interactive beauty cosmetics has been demonstrated, and e.g. painted fake fingernails integrating RFID tags have been introduced 8.In the altogether little studied field of digital fashion, handbags are an un

10、derexplored area. Yet, the first design handbags employing a public display are already available 2. For many of their users handbags are almost sacred objects, being intensely personal and private 7.User Ideation for a Smart HandbagStudy SettingHere we present our unpublished results on ideating a

11、smart handbag concept. The data relates to the smart handbag study presented in more detail in 3. After interacting with the concept design presented in 3 participants were asked to complete a self-expression task and draw their idea of interactive handbag design on a Self-Expression Template 1 desi

12、gned to suit the study topic. The template (Figure 1) had a human figure on the right lower corner, and a handbag illustrated in opposite corner. After finishing their drawings, participants were asked to explain them. The procedure was video recorded, transcribed and analyzed by applying general qu

13、alitative coding principles.We recruited 20 female participants with ages between 22 and 63 years (M = 33 years). Half of the participants owned less than five handbags, whilst the remainder owned more than six, with some owning more than ten.ResultsFORM FACTOR OF THE HANDBAGIn the drawing task, the

14、 most common form factor for the smart handbag was a shoulder bag (14 participants out of 20), where six preferred a satchel type bag where the strap went diagonally across the body. This choice was argued for its practicality e.g. when cycling. The shoulder bag was described as the most multipurpos

15、e form factor for its use, as it allowed carrying the bag in different ways. Altogether 5/20 participants drew a bag which was held in a hand. Figure 2 summarizes the participants sketches, visualizing the variation of sizes and the way of carrying the handbag.Figure 1: The self-expression template

16、used in the study.The most common other form factor related comments considered the style related to the shape. The preferred handbag design was described as classic, timeless and neutral, in order it to fit with different kinds of outfits and use cases and not to become outdated.
