1、Unit 4 Jobs and Careers Interpretation of Quotations The purpose of work is to remove those who are living from a state of wretchedness and lead them into a state of blessedness. -Dante Wretched: Someone who feels wretched feels very unhappy. Work can help people get out of unpleasant situations and

2、 refresh them with happiness. Work is, by its very nature, about violence to the spirit as well as the body; its above all about daily humiliations; its about a search for daily meaning as well as daily bread; for recognition as well as cash; for astonishment rather than torpor. In short, for a sort

3、 of life rather than a Monday through Friday sort of dying. Torpor is the state of being completely inactive mentally or physically, for example because of illness or laziness. The nature of work involves both physical and spiritual struggles. Beyond all other considerations, work is about constant

4、embarrassment and shame you feel about yourself every day. Work is a two-sided thing: on the one hand, one has to work to make money and maintain his/her livelihood; on the other hand , one gains spiritual delight and social recognition by working. Work is less boring than fascinating oneself. To su

5、m up, the purpose of work is to search for a meaningful life rather than to go through a routine and mechanical one.
