But for years I denied this intuition, and so I becamea Wall Street lawyer, of all things, instead of the writer thatI had always longed to be - partly because I needed to prove tomys

8、elf that I could be bold and assertive too. And I was alwaysgoing off to crowded bars when I really would have preferred tojust have a nice dinner with friends. And I made theseself-negating choices so refle*ively, that I wasnt even awarethat I was making them.Now this is what many introverts do, an

9、d its our loss forsure, but it is also our colleagues loss and our communities loss.And at the risk of sounding grandiose, it is the worlds loss.Because when it comes to creativity and to leadership, we needintroverts doing what they do best. A third to a half of thepopulation are introverts - a thi

10、rd to a half. So thats one outof every two or three people you know. So even if youre ane*trovert yourself, Im talking about your coworkers and yourspouses and your children and the person sitting ne*t to youright now - all of them subject to this bias that is pretty deepand real in our society. We

11、all internalize it from a very earlyage without even having a language for what were doing.Now to see the bias clearly you need to understand whatintroversion is. Its different from being shy. Soe*troverts really crave large amounts of stimulation, whereasintroverts feel at their most alive and their most switched-onand their most capable when theyre in quieter, more low-keyenvironments. Not all the time - these thing

13、s arent absolute -but a lot of the time. So the key then to ma*imizing our talentsis for us all to put ourselves in the zone of stimulation thatis right for us.But now heres where the bias comes in. Our most importantinstitutions, our schools and our workplaces,they are designedmostly for e*troverts

14、 and for e*troverts need for lots ofstimulation. And also we have this belief system right now thatI call the new groupthink, which holds that all creativity andall productivity comes from a very oddly gregarious place.So if you picture the typical classroom nowadays: When Iwas going to school, we s

15、at in rows. We sat in rows of desks likethis, and we did most of our work pretty autonomously. Butnowadays, your typical classroom has pods of desks - four orfive or si* or seven kids all facing each other. And kids areworking in countless group assignments. Even in subjects likemath and creative wr

16、iting, which you think would depend on soloflights of thought, kids are now e*pected to act as committeemembers. And for the kids who prefer to go off by themselves orjust to work alone, those kids are seen as outliers often or,worse, as problem cases. And the vast majority of teachersreports believ

Now, most ofus work in open pla

18、n offices, without walls, where we are subjectto the constant noise and gaze of our coworkers. And when it comesto leadership, introverts are routinely passed over forleadership positions, even though introverts tend to be verycareful, much less likely to take outsize risks - which issomething we mi

19、ght all favor nowadays. And interesting researchby Adam Grant at the Wharton School has found that introvertedleaders often deliver better outcomes than e*troverts do, becausewhen they are managing proactive employees, theyre much morelikely to let those employees run with their ideas, whereas ane*t

20、rovert can, quite unwittingly, get so e*cited about thingsthat theyre putting their own stamp on things, and other peoplesideas might not as easily then bubble up to the surface.Now in fact, some of our transformative leaders in historyhave been introverts. Ill give you some e*amples. EleanorRooseve

21、lt, Rosa Parks, Gandhi - all these peopled describedthemselves as quiet and soft-spoken and even shy. And they alltook the spotlight, even though every bone in their bodies wastelling them not to. And this turns out to have a special powerall its own, because people could feel that these leaders wer

22、eat the helm, not because they enjoyed directing others and notout of the pleasure of being looked at; they were there becausethey had no choice, because they were driven to do what theythought was right.Now I think at this point its important for me to say thatI actually love e*troverts. I always l

And we allfall at different points, of course, along theintrovert/e*trovert spectrum. Even Carl Jung, the psychologistwho first popularized these terms, said that theres no s

24、uch thingas a pure introvert or a pure e*trovert. He said that such a manwould be in a lunatic asylum, if he e*isted at all. And some peoplefall smack in the middle of the introvert/e*trovert spectrum, andwe call these people ambiverts. And I often think that they havethe best of all worlds. But man

25、y of usdo recognize ourselvesasone type or the other.And what Im saying is that culturally we need a much betterbalance. We need more of a yinand yang between these two types.This is especially important when it comes to creativity and toproductivity, because when psychologists look at the lives of

26、themost creative people, what they find are people who are very goodat e*changing ideas and advancing ideas, but who also have aserious streak of introversion in them.And this is because solitude is a crucial ingredient oftento creativity. So Darwin, hetook long walksalone in the woodsand emphatical

27、ly turned downdinner party invitations. TheodorGeisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, he dreamed up many of hisamazing creations in a lonely bell tower office that he had inthe back of his house in La Jolla, California. And he was actuallyafraid to meet the young children who read his books for fearthat

29、d he says that he never would have become such an e*pertin the first place had he not been too introverted to leave thehouse when he was growing up.Now of course, this does not mean that we should all stopcollaborating - and case in point, is Steve Wozniak famouslycoming together with Steve Jobs to

30、start Apple Computer - butit does mean that solitude matters and that for some people itis the air that they breathe. And in fact, we have known forcenturies about the transcendent power of solitude. Its onlyrecently that weve strangely begun to forget it. If you look atmost of the worlds major reli

31、gions, you will find seekers - Moses,Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad - seekers who are going off by themselvesalone to the wilderness where they then have profound epiphaniesand revelations that they then bring back to the rest of thecommunity. So no wilderness, no revelations.This is no surprise though if

32、you look at the insights ofcontemporary psychology. It turns out that we cant even be ina group of people without instinctively mirroring, mimickingtheir opinions. Even about seemingly personal and visceralthings like who youre attracted to, you will start aping thebeliefs of the people around you without even realizing thatthats what youre doing.第 6 页 共 6 页
