1、IntroductionIn English, there are many words that seem very simple, but there are a lot of meanings.And also, there are many phrases that you cannot translate literally if you want to express yourself in native English. To learn these words and phrases well will be helpful for you in learning Englis

Example 1View view不一定是指风景，也可表示视野范围内可及的场景，比如：The speaker stood in full view of the crowd. 演讲者站在大家都能看的到的地方。 而从抽象意义上，view更多的是指观点，做名词的用法大家都很熟悉了，但其实也同样可以做动词，比如：We can view the problem in many ways.Example 2Access access作为动词，可以同时表示形象和抽象意义上的进入，抽象的可以是指接触某种信息，比如：我没有权限去查看这些文档。I am not authorized to access
3、these files. 而当access作为名词的时候，可以表示通道，入口，或仅仅是能够到达的路径：The only access to their house is along that narrow road.Example 3Done done表示已经完成，可以用在很多场合。比如，把工作完成，可以说，get the job done， 和朋友一起逛商店，问别人看完这家了吗？可以就简单地说，Are you done? 我和你结束了，我没话说了，就说Im done with you. 或者 We are done.Example 4Line line就是指线，和任何可以看做线状的物体，形象
4、或抽象的均可，比如热线电话（hotline），电话正被占线（the line is busy right now.），地铁1号线(metro line 1)，排队插队（Jump the line），你越界了，表示过了能忍受的底线（You crossed the line.）Example 5John John可以说是常用的男子名，因此有了一些姓名以外的普遍意义。比如: go to the John，就是去男厕所的意思，另外，男厕所还可以说成mens room。经常看犯罪类美剧的朋友一定知道另一个用法，男性无名氏的时候叫John DoeExample 6Get get在口语中有两个常用的用法：
5、1）get表示理解，明白。如：Did you get what he said?或者I dont get it. 2)be getting 天色晚了可以说Its getting dark. 时间不早了可以说Its getting late. Example 7Shift shift做动词是转换的意思，如开车换挡，shift the gear，键盘（keyboard）上的切换键也叫shift， 而做名词的时候，除了表示转变，还可以表示轮岗，轮班。比如，Maggie and I are doing shifts for the job.Example 8Diet diet指的是日常饮食（一般指有一
6、定限制的，有特殊规律的）。如: The doctor told him that he had to be on a diet to prevent having another heart attack. 现在很多女生说要减肥，不吃这个，不吃那个，可以直接说Im on a diet. 不用说Im losing weight.Example 9Snap snap作为动词的时候，可以表示动作本身及动作发出的声音。例如：She snapped the door shut. 指的是她猛力关上门的动作，也是她关门发出的声音。Make a snap，指的是手指打指响的声音，Its a snap.结合语境
7、，有时跟Its a piece of cake.的意思一致,表示事情很容易，小菜一碟 。Example 10String string指线或细绳，学弦乐的同学对string一定不会陌生，而在计算机术语中string指字符串。a string of自然是指一连串有联系的事物，而我们常说的拉关系，走后门就叫pull some strings，如：I have to pull some strings to make sure you will get the position.Example 11Ring ring本意就是铃声，既可以做名词，像手机铃声ring tones，也可以做动词，如：The
8、 phone is ringing. 或者Feel free to ring me any time. 一句常用的idiom是It rings a bell. 指别人提到的事情很耳熟，或自己也略有所闻Example 12Word 说道word，第一反应通常是单词，但其实word经常在句子中可以解释成一句话，甚至一段话。比如：Can I have a word with you? 我可以跟你说两句吗？You have my word. 我会信守承诺的。Example 13Way way和一些介词组合时有far或者much more的意思。如way beyond my understanding，
9、表示远远超出我的理解，又如way out of line，是太过分了，过头了的意思，而way back表示很久以前，如：They know each other from way back。Example14Drive drive的用途非常广泛，从开车可以延伸到其他方面。比如，当你想问别人到底在说什么的时候可以说，”What are you driving at?” 当你想赶走烦恼，可以说drive away the worries。Example 15hold your breath 因为生日许愿或有惊喜的时候，都会因为期待而深吸一口气，所以hold your breath就是期待某些事情尽
10、快发生的意思， 相反，Dont hold your breath就是不要期待会太快发生，如You think hell get a job? Ha! Dont hold your breath.Example 16at sixes and sevens 表示人或事物毫无条理，杂乱无章。比如：Mrs. Smith is at sixes and sevens since the death of her husband. 自从史密斯夫人的丈夫去世后，她就生活得毫无条理。Example17 wait for the other shoe to drop 这个短语的字面意思是“等另一只鞋子掉下来”。
11、但可以引申为“提心吊胆地等待最后结果”。例如：Business is bad so the firm has to fire 100 employees. Theyve already announced the first 50, and now the rest of us are waiting for the other shoe to drop.业务不景气，所以公司不得不辞退100名雇员。他们已经宣布了首批五十名解雇人员的名单，目前我们留下来的这些人都在提心吊胆地等待最后结果。Example18the jury is still out 字面意思是陪审团还在庭外商议，尚未作出谁是谁非
12、的决断，可以引申为“结果还未见分晓”。例如：Well, the first sales figures from New York look good. But were waiting to hear the figures from Chicago and Los Angeles, so I have to tell you the jury is still out.第一批来自纽约的销售数据看起来不错，但是他们还在等待芝加哥和洛杉矶两地的数据，所以目前（整体销售情况如何）还没有定论。Example 19Those boys like to hit on me all the time.
13、那些男生老爱找我搭讪.Hit somebody 是说你打某人的意思, 但是 hit on somebody 就不一样了, hit on somebody 是当作搭讪来解释. 常常电视剧里可以看到, 一个男的跑去跟一个陌生女孩多说了两句话, 那个女生就说: Are you hitting on me? 你现在是在跟我搭讪吗? 实在是很有意思。 Example 20I dont want to be the third wheel 我不想当电灯泡.一般的自行车都只有二个轮子, 要是有三个轮子呢? 没错, 那第三个轮子就是多余的. 所以 Third wheel 就是美语中电灯泡正确的表示方法. 还有
14、一个*, 叫 I dont want to be the third arm. 这里不是说 “三只手”的意思, 而是和 third wheel 一样, 都是电灯泡的意思. Example 21Im all over you. 我对你非常地著迷.“All over you” 就是说对你非常地著迷, 这还有另一种表示方法, 叫 I have a crush on you. 这二句都是表达很喜欢某人的意思.All over somebody 还有一个很常用的用法, 比如说你去舞厅跳舞, 看到有一对男女跳到三点都贴在一起了, 你就可以跟你的同伴说, Hey, look, the guy is danc
15、ing all over the girl.Example 22 Thats the long distance relationship. 我和我的情人分隔两地.一般relationship都是特别指男女朋友之间的关系, 比如你可以跟你的另一半说, I really appreciate our relationship. 就是我很感激我们能够在一起. Example 23You are nothing like us. 你一点都不象我们。Its nothing like Hobbit/You guys, this cat is nothing like my grandmas cat.（n
16、othing like sth表示一点都不像）Example24not over till the fat lady sings 这话按照字面意思来说就是“不到那位胖女士唱的时候就还没完”，引申为“事情还没定局，仍然有得胜的转机”。例如：You guys know were only two games behind the leader with eight games left to play. We still have a chance to catch up: remember its not over till the fat lady sings.要知道我们比领先球队仅仅落后两场球，而且我们还有八场比赛要打。所以我们有希望后来居上。记住还没到定局的时候呢!The end!
