10、gnprogramanticipatedlargegatheringsoftheownersfriends.Withfrequentafternoonrains,thespaceisdesignedtoincludethepossibilityoftentingtheentireyard.Acascadingwallofwaterformsthebackdroptothegarden,disappearingsuddenlyintoquietreflectingpools,oneofwhichalsofunctionsasarecreationalspa.Aseparate,geometric
11、poolofshallowwaterislocatedinthecenterofthecourtyard.Fromthepromontoryabove,thisplaneprovidesamirrortothedramaticeverchangingsky.Thepromontorygardeniselevatedabovethesurroundinglandscapetocelebratethedramaticviewsattheveryedgeoftheskyline.lEnvironmental sensitivity and sustainabilityBylimitingthedis
12、turbancewithwallsandadaptingthehometothehillsidesite,theresidentialgardenbecomespartofthenaturalsetting.Sustainabledesignelementsinclude:lPlantsnativetothesub-alpinelifezonewereutilizedinthelandscapedesign.Oftenunavailablefromcommercialnurseries,somespecieswerespecificallygrownforthissite.Theconcept
13、ofthegardenwasadaptedtotheconditionsofhighaltitudewithselectionsofplantmaterials,soilsonthesite,andrevegetationmethodstoestablishnativeplantcommunities.Theinclusionofagreenroofcreatedenergysavingsfortheresidenceandsignificantlyshelterstheheatingrequiredbythehome.Alldrainagehasbeencapturedfromroofsan
14、dterracesandretainedindrywellsonsite,resultinginnonetincreaseinrun-off.Sustainablesitedevelopmentguidelineshavebeenfollowedthatwereestablishedbythelocalcountyandincludeenhancementofwildlifehabitatswiththeplantingofcertainplantspecies.lContextTheresidenceislocatedatanelevationof9,000feetonaslopingsit
15、eofmixedconifersandaspen.Viewsareexpansivetothewestandnorth;otheraspectsarehiddeninthehillside.Theresidenceandgardenarecontainedbyretainingwallstoavoiddisturbanceonanecologicallyfragilesite.Aclimatestudywascompletedtodesignstrategiestoshelteroutdoorspacesfromthewindandcapturesunlight.Accesstosunandclimateledtoflexibleterracesallowingfurnituretobeadjusteddependingonthetimeofday.
