22、er.Aristotle distinguishesbetweenwhathebelievestobegenuinefriendshipsandtwootherforms:onebasedonmutualusefulness,theotheronpleasure.So,accordingtoAristotle,wemayfindthreekindsoffriendship:3Friendshipbasedonutility.Utilityisanimpermanentthing:itchanges according to circumstances. When the ground forf

23、riendshipdisappears,thefriendshipalsobreaksupbecausethatiswhat keeps it alive. Friendships of this kind seem to occur mostfrequentlybetweentheelderly,becauseattheiragewhattheywantis not pleasure but utility. Friendships based on utility are alsofrequently found among those in middle or early life wh

24、o arepursuing their own advantage. Such persons do not spend muchtimetogether,becausesometimestheydonotevenlikeoneanother,andthereforefeelnoneedofsuchanassociationunlesstheyaremutuallyuseful.Theyeachotherscompanyonlytheyhavehopesofadvantagefromit.In-DepthtakepleasureininsofarasIn-Depth4Friendshipbas
