1、1 罗斯福演讲FranklinD.RooseveltsFourthInauguralAddressWeAmericansoftoday,togetherwithourallies,arepassingthroughaperiodofsupremetest.Itisatestofourcourageofourresolveofourwisdomouressentialdemocracy.Ifwemeetthattestsuccessfullyandhonorablyweshallperformaserviceofhistoricimportancewhichmenandwomenandchild
2、renwillhonorthroughoutalltime.AsIstandheretoday,havingtakenthesolemnoathofofficeinthepresenceofmyfellowcountrymeninthepresenceofourGodIknowthatitisAmericaspurposethatweshallnotfail.Inthedaysandintheyearsthataretocomeweshallworkforajustandhonorablepeace,adurablepeace,astodayweworkandfightfortotalvict
3、oryinwar.Wecanandwewillachievesuchapeace.Weshallstriveforperfection.Weshallnotachieveitimmediatelybutwestillshallstrive.Wemaymakemistakesbuttheymustneverbemistakeswhichresultfromfaintnessofheartorabandonmentofmoralprinciple.Irememberthatmyoldschoolmaster,Dr.Peabody,said,indaysthatseemedtousthentobes
4、ecureanduntroubled:Thingsinlifewillnotalwaysrunsmoothly.Sometimeswewillberisingtowardtheheightsthenallwillseemtoreverseitselfandstartdownward.Thegreatfacttorememberisthatthetrendofcivilizationitselfisforeverupward;thatalinedrawnthroughthemiddleofthepeaksandthevalleysofthecenturiesalwayshasanupwardtr
5、end.OurConstitutionof1787wasnotaperfectinstrument;itisnotperfectyet.Butitprovidedafirmbaseuponwhichallmannerofmen,ofallracesandcolorsandcreeds,couldbuildoursolidstructureofdemocracy.Andsotoday,inthisyearofwar,1945,wehavelearnedlessonsatafearfulcostandweshallprofitbythem.Wehavelearnedthatwecannotlive
6、alone,atpeace;thatourownwell-beingisdependentonthewell-beingofothernationsfaraway.Wehavelearnedthatwemustliveasmen,notasostriches,norasdogsinthemanger.Wehavelearnedtobecitizensoftheworld,membersofthehumancommunity.Wehavelearnedthesimpletruth,asEmersonsaid,thatTheonlywaytohaveafriendistobeone.Wecanga
