4、avegivenrisetoTransformationalGrammar,whichisproposedfirstlybyChomskyandacceptedworld-widelyinthefieldoflinguisticstudy.Eventhose,whoworkinfieldslikephonologyorwithunitslikethemorpheme,donotdescribethemselvesasstructuralists.IsStructuralGrammarreallyout-dated?Doseitdieawaytotallyfromthenowadayslingu
5、isticstudy?But“iflinguisticsisnolongerofficiallystructural,whysomanylinguistsandtheoriesarestillinfluencedbystructuralistideas,Matthews,2020:142namely,patternteaching.ThispaperbeginswiththerevisionofStructuralGrammar,andthendescribestheAudiolingualMethodinfluencedbyideasofStructuralLinguistics,anden
6、dsupwithdiscussionofsignificanceandapplicationofPatternteaching-onerealizationofAudiolingualMethod-inordertodepictthatStructuralLinguisticsisstillvaluableinrecentlinguisticstudy.1.StructuralGrammarStructuralGrammariansthinkthateverylanguagehastightstructuralwhichmakesthatlanguageaspecificsystem.Itis
7、becauseofmasteringthesystematicstructurethatpeoplecanunderstandandproducesentenceswhichtheyhaventheardbefore.Grammarshouldbeconstructedtodescribelanguagestructureanddisplaylanguagesystemobjectively.HeLinmei,2020:59ThestructuraldescriptionofEnglishbeginswithananalysisofthesoundofthelanguageingeneral,
8、andthengoesontoisolatemutuallyexclusivegroupsofgrammardescriptionproceedstothenexthighestlevel,thewordstructuremorphologyofEnglish,whichinvolvestheisolationofthesmallestmeaning-bearingunits,themorphemes,whichmakeupthewordsofthelanguage.Finally,structuralgrammaranalyzesthephrasestructure,orsyntax,ofE
9、nglish.Atthislevel,thegrammarianlooksforthevariouswaysinwhichcanbecombinedtoproducegrammaticalEnglishsentences.Lapalombara,1976Therefore,therewillbeasystem:somepatternsoforganizationwhichcontributetogrammaticalmeaning.AsFriesargued,asentenceisastructuralpatternwhichismadeupof“partsofspeechwhichcanbe
10、identifiedbothbytheirformalmarkersandbytheirpositionorpositionsinthepattern,thenwemusttestforallsentencepositionsinwhichthatpartofspeechcanoccur.Becausealanguagehasasystemforputtingitswordstogetherinmeaningfulrelationships,Englishsentencecanrangeinlengthfromoneortwotoatheoreticallylimitlessnumberofw
11、ords.Indeed,mostofthesentenceswhichmostofusspeakandunderstandareagreatdealmorecomplexthanwerealize.Yetwespeakournativelanguagewithoutconsciousthoughtaboutthegrammarrulesweusewhenweputoursentencestogether.Structurallinguistsbelievethatsuchlanguageabilityisalearnedprocess,madepossiblebytwofactors:1hum
12、anspowersofobservationandtheirhighlyevolvedbraincapacity,whichmakeitpossibleforthemtoreasoninductively;and2thestructured,highlyorganizednatureoflanguage.Towhatextentthesefactorsexplainlanguageacquisitionisopentoquestion,butisundeniablethatlanguageissystematicallystructured.2.AudiolingualMethodTherea
13、sonwhyStructuralLinguisticshasbeenpopularforalongperiodfrom1930sto1950sisthatitwaswidelyappliedintolanguageteachingandlearningandhadgotgoodeffects.LiuRunqing,2020:148ThetheoryoflanguageunderlyingAudiolingualismwasderivedfromaviewproposedbyAmericanlinguistsinthe1950saviewthatcametobeknownasStructural
14、Linguistics.AccordingtoStructuralLinguistics,languageisviewedasasystemofstructurallyrelatedelementsfortheencodingofmeaning,theelementsbeingphonemes,morphemes,words,structures,andsentencetypes.Theterm“structuralreferredtothesecharacteristics:1Elementsinalanguagearethoughtofasbeinglinearlyproducedinar
15、ule-governedstructuralway.2Languagesamplescouldbeexhaustivelydescribedatanystructurallevelofdescription.3Linguisticlevelsarethoughtofassystemswithinsystemsthatis,asbeingpyramidallystructured;phonemicsystemsledtomorphemicsystems,andtheseinturnledtothehigher-levelsystemsofphrases,clauses,andsentences.
16、Inthissense,learningalanguage,itisassumed,entailsmasteringtheelementsorbuildingblocksofthelanguageandlearningtherulesbywhichtheseelementsarecombined,fromphonemetomorphemetowordtophrasetosentence.Hence,AudiolingualMethodcontainsfiveprincipleswhichreflectBloomfieldsidea.Theprinciplesare:1Languageisspeech;2Languageisasetofhabits;3Toteachinglanguageistoteachhowtolearnakindoflanguageratherthantorecognizeit;4Languageshouldbewhatnativespeak
