5、agespeakersandtargetlanguageaudiences.Whatismore，propersubtitlesshouldofferadequatemessagesaboutwhatthefilminitiallyshouldconveysothatthemoviecanattainthevalueofitsentertainment，culture，andappreciationfortheaudiences.ThispaperwillapplytheRelevanceTheorytoanalyzethesubtitletranslationoftheEnglishmovi
6、eTitanicintoChinese，whichaimsatattestingthatthistranslatedChineseversionhasfulfilledtheoptimalrelevanceandthattheinitialintentionhasbeenclearlyconveyedtotheaudienceoftargetlanguage.Thispaperselecssomeexamplesfromthemoviescreen.Withalloftheseconsidered，theRelevanceTheory，throughexplanationanddescript

9、ranslationtheoryfromhisdoctoralthesis.Meanwhile，hisdoctoralthesisalsopresentedaneffectivetooltohelppeopleinterprettherelativelycomplicatedphenomenon.endprintA.TheInferentialNatureofRelevanceGenerallyspeaking，communicationwasgenerallyregardedasamatterofencodinganddecodinginformationthroughthecodemode

11、d.Whentheliteralmeaningofutterancesisnotinlinewithitsimpliedmeaning，thecodemodelfailstoplayaneffectivepartinconveyingthetruemeaningofutterances.Nevertheless，theRelevanceTheorycannotbesimplyregardedasaprocessoflinguisticallyencodinganddecoding.Generallyspeaking，ascientificdefinitionofcommunicationsho
12、uldbeanunityofencoding，decodingtogetherwithinference.Theinferencecanberegardedasaneffectivetooltoobtaintherealmeaningoftheutterancesonthebasisofdecoding.B.ThePrincipleofRelevanceRelevancecanbedefinedas“Anassumptionisrelevantinacontextifandonlyifithassomecontextualeffectinthatcontext.Sperber122.Thati
13、sconsideredasacentralnotionintheRelevanceTheory.Andtherearetwofundamentalfactorsinthedeterminationofthedegreeofrelevance.Oneisaboutthecontextualeffect，andtheotherisabouttheprocessingeffort.Andthehumancognitionandcommunicationarethetwomainfactorsinclaimingtheprincipleofrelevance.Humancognitionintends
