2、le,especiallyontheoccasionofthe300thanniversary.Ihavehadsomanymemoriesofmytimehere,andasNickwasspeakingIthoughtabouthowIendedupatYaleLawSchool.Andittellsalittlebitabouthowmuchprogresswevemade.WhatIthinkmostaboutwhenIthinkofYaleisnotjustthepoliticallychargedatmosphereandnotevenjustthesuperblegaleduca
3、tionthatIreceived.ItwasatYalethatIbeganworkthathasbeenatthecoreofwhatIhavecaredabouteversince.IbeganworkingwithNewHavenlegalservicesrepresentingchildren.AndIstudiedchilddevelopment,abuseandneglectattheYaleNewHavenHospitalandtheChildStudyCenter.IwasluckyenoughtoreceiveacivilrightsinternshipwithMarian
4、WrightEdelmanattheChildrensDefenseFund,whereIwenttoworkafterIgraduated.Thoseexperiencesfueledinmeapassiontoworkforthebenefitofchildren,particularlythemostvulnerable.Now,lookingback,thereisnowaythatIcouldhavepredictedwhatpathmylifewouldhavetaken.Ididntsitaroundthelawschool,saying,well,youknow,IthinkI
5、llgraduateandthenIllgotoworkattheChildrensDefenseFund,andthentheimpeachmentinquiry,andNixonretiredorresigns,IllgotoArkansas.Ididntthinklikethat.Iwastakingeachdayatatime.But,IvebeenveryfortunatebecauseIvealwayshadanideainmymindaboutwhatIthoughtwasimportantandwhatgavemylifemeaningandpurpose.Asetofvalu
6、esandbeliefsthathavehelpedmenavigatetheshoals,thesometimesverytreacheroussea,toilluminatemyowntruedesires,despitethatotherssayaboutwhatlshouldcareaboutandbelievein.Apassiontosucceedatwhatlthoughtwasimportantandchildrenhavealwaysprovidedthatlonestar,thatguidinglight.Becauselhavethatabsoluteconviction
7、thateverychild,especiallyinthis,themostblessedofnationsthathaseverexistedonthefaceofearth,thateverychilddeservestheopportunitytoliveuptohisorherGod-givenpotential.Butyouknowthatbeliefandconviction-itmaymakeforapersonalmissionstatement,butstandingalone,nottranslatedintoaction,itmeansverylittletoanyon
8、eelse,particularlytothoseforwhomyouhavethoseconcerns.WhenIwasthinkingaboutrunningfortheUnitedStatesSenate-whichwassuchanenormousdecisiontomake,oneInevercouldhavedreamedthatIwouldhavebeenmakingwhenIwashereoncampus-IvisitedaschoolinNewYorkCityandImetayoungwoman,whowasastarathlete.IwastherebecauseofBil
9、lyJeanKingpromotinganHBOspecialaboutwomeninsportscalled“Daretocompete.”ItwasaboutTitleIXandhowwefinally,thankstogovernmentaction,providedopportunitiestogirlsandwomeninsports.AndalthoughIplayednotverywellatintramuralsports,Ihavealwaysbeenastrongsupporterofwomeninsports.AndIwasintroducedbythisyoungwom
10、an,andasIwenttoshakeherhandsheobviouslyhadbeenreadingthenewspapersaboutpeoplesayingIshouldorshouldntrunfortheSenate.AndIwascongratulatingheronthespeechshehadjustmadeandsheheldontomyhandandshesaid,“Daretocompete,Mrs.Clinton.Daretocompete.”Itookthattoheartbecauseitishardtocompetesometimes,especiallyin
11、publicways,whenyourfailuresarethereforeveryonetoseeandyoudontknowwhatisgoingtohappenfromonedaytothenext.Andyetsomuchoflife,whetherweliketoacceptitornot,iscompetingwithourselvestobethebestwecanbe,beinginvolvedinclassesorprofessionsorjustlife,whereweknowwearecompetingwithothers.ItookheradviceandIdidco
12、mpetebecauseIchosetodoso.Andthebiggestchoicesthatyoullfaceinyourlifewillbeyoursalonetomake.Imsureyoullreceivegoodadvice.Youregotagreateducationtogobackandreflectaboutwhatisrightforyou,butyoueventuallywillhavetochooseandIhopethatyouwilldaretocompete.AndbythatIdontmeanthekindofcutthroatcompetitionthat
13、istoooftencharacterizedbywhatisdrivingAmericatoday.Imeanthesmallvoiceinsideyouthatsaystoyou,youcandoit,youcantakethisrisk,youcantakethisnextstep.Anditdoesntmeanthatoncehavingmadethatchoiceyouwillalwayssucceed.Infact,youwont.Therearesetbacksandyouwillexperiencedifficultdisappointments.Youwillbeslowed
14、downandsometimesthebreathwilljustbeknockedoutofyou.Butifyoucarrywithyouthevaluesandbeliefsthatyoucanmakeadifferenceinyourownlife,firstandforemost,andtheninthelivesofothers.Youcangetbackup,youcankeepgoing.Butitisalsoimportant,asIhavefound,nottotakeyourselftooseriously,becauseafterall,everyoneofushere
15、today,noneofusisdeservingoffullcredit.Ithinkeverydayoftheblessingsmybirthgavemewithoutanydoingofmyown.Ichoseneithermyfamilynormycountry,buttheyasmuchasanythingIveeverdone,determinedmycourse.Youcomparemyoryourcircumstanceswiththoseofthemajorityofpeoplewhoveeverlivedorwhoarelivingrightnow,theytoooften
16、arebornknowingtoowellwhattheirfutureswillbe.Theylackthefreedomtochoosetheirlifespath.Theyreimprisonedbycircumstancesofpovertyandignorance,bigotry,disease,hunger,oppressionandwar.So,daretocompete,yes,butmaybeevenmoredifficult,daretocare.Daretocareaboutpeoplewhoneedourhelptosucceedandfulfilltheirownlives.Therearesomanyoutthereandsometimesallittakesisthesimplestofgesturesorhelpinghandsandmanyofyouunderstandthatalready.Iknowthatthenumbersofgrad
