2、ftheAmericanspirit.Ihaveseenitintheincrediblekindnessandwarmththatpeoplehaveshownmeandmyfamily,especiallyourgirls.Iveseenitinteachersinanear-bankruptschooldistrictwhovowedtokeepteachingwithoutpay.Yousee,eventhoughbackthenBarackwasaSenatorandapresidentialcandidate.tome,hewasstilltheguywhodpickedmeupf
3、orourdatesinacarthatwassorustedout,Icouldactuallyseethepavementgoingbythroughaholeinthepassengersidedoor.hewastheguywhoseproudestpossessionwasacoffeetablehedfoundinadumpster,andwhoseonlypairofdecentshoeswashalfasizetoosmall.ButwhenBarackstartedtellingmeabouthisfamilythatswhenIknewIhadfoundakindredsp
4、irit,someonewhosevaluesandupbringingweresomuchlikemine.Yousee,BarackandIwerebothraisedbyfamilieswhodidnthavemuchinthewayofmoneyormaterialpossessionsbutwhohadgivenussomethingfarmorevaluabletheirunconditionallove,theirunflinchingsacrifice,andthechancetogoplacestheyhadneverimaginedforthemselves.Myfathe
5、rwasapumpoperatoratthecitywaterplant,andhewasdiagnosedwithMultipleSclerosiswhenmybrotherandIwereyoung.Andevenasakid,Iknewtherewereplentyofdayswhenhewasinpain.Iknewtherewereplentyofmorningswhenitwasastruggleforhimtosimplygetoutofbed.Buteverymorning,Iwatchedmyfatherwakeupwithasmile,grabhiswalker,proph
6、imselfupagainstthebathroomsink,andslowlyshaveandbuttonhisuniform.Andwhenhereturnedhomeafteralongdayswork,mybrotherandIwouldstandatthetopofthestairstoourlittleapartment,patientlywaitingtogreethim.watchingashereacheddowntoliftoneleg,andthentheother,toslowlyclimbhiswayintoourarms.Butdespitethesechallen
7、ges,mydadhardlyevermissedadayofwork.heandmymomweredeterminedtogivemeandmybrotherthekindofeducationtheycouldonlydreamof.AndwhenmybrotherandIfinallymadeittocollege,nearlyallofourtuitioncamefromstudentloansandgrants.Butmydadstillhadtopayatinyportionofthattuitionhimself.Andeverysemester,hewasdeterminedt
8、opaythatbillrightontime,eventakingoutloanswhenhefellshort.Hewassoproudtobesendinghiskidstocollege.andhemadesurewenevermissedaregistrationdeadlinebecausehischeckwaslate.Yousee,formydad,thatswhatitmeanttobeaman.Likesomanyofus,thatwasthemeasureofhissuccessinlifebeingabletoearnadecentlivingthatallowedhi
9、mtosupporthisfamily.AndasIgottoknowBarack,Irealizedthateventhoughhedgrownupallthewayacrossthecountry,hedbeenbroughtupjustlikeme.Barackwasraisedbyasinglemotherwhostruggledtopaythebills,andbygrandparentswhosteppedinwhensheneededhelp.Baracksgrandmotherstartedoutasasecretaryatacommunitybank.andshemovedq
10、uicklyuptheranks.butlikesomanywomen,shehitaglassceiling.Andforyears,mennomorequalifiedthanshewasmenshehadactuallytrainedwerepromoteduptheladderaheadofher,earningmoreandmoremoneywhileBaracksfamilycontinuedtoscrapeby.Butdayafterday,shekeptonwakingupatdawntocatchthebus.arrivingatworkbeforeanyoneelse.gi
11、vingherbestwithoutcomplaintorregret.AndshewouldoftentellBarack,Solongasyoukidsdowell,Bar,thatsallthatreallymatters.LikesomanyAmericanfamilies,ourfamilieswerentaskingformuch.Theydidntbegrudgeanyoneelsessuccessorcarethatothershadmuchmorethantheydid.infact,theyadmiredit.Theysimplybelievedinthatfundamen
12、talAmericanpromisethat,evenifyoudontstartoutwithmuch,ifyouworkhardanddowhatyouresupposedtodo,thenyoushouldbeabletobuildadecentlifeforyourselfandanevenbetterlifeforyourkidsandgrandkids.Thatshowtheyraisedus.thatswhatwelearnedfromtheirexample.Welearnedaboutdignityanddecencythathowhardyouworkmattersmore
