4、elearningstrategies2.1DefinitionsoflanguagelearningstrategiesLanguagelearningstrategieshavebeendevelopedfrom1970s.Rubin1975definedlanguagelearningstrategiesastoolsthatexcellentlanguagelearnersmayuseforachievingknowledge.Stern1975comparedthedifferentbehaviorsbetweenexcellentandpoorlanguagelearnersand
5、definedlanguagelearningstrategiesasparticularformsofobservablebehaviors.Chamot1987analyzedlanguagelearningstrategiesfromfunctionalperspectiveandreferredthetermastechniquesormethodsorpurposefulactionsthatlanguageuserstaketofacilitatelearninglinguisticandcontentinformation.Tarone1980concernedmorefroms
6、ocialaspectandaddedsociolinguisticinformationtotheareaoflearnersinformationacquisition.Rubin1987redefinedthistermfromtheangleoflearningeffectandviewedstrategiesasawholetodevelopthelanguagesystem.Oxford1990gaveacomprehensivedefinitionofthistermsinceitcoveredallprocessesoflanguagelearningincludinginte
7、rnalization,storage,retrievalanduseofthenewlanguageandconsideredthelanguagedevelopmentofL2learners.2.2ClassificationsoflanguagelearningstrategiesOMallyandChamot1990dividedlanguagelearningstrategiesintothreemajorcategories:metacognitive,cognitiveandsocial/affectivestrategies.Thethree-wayclassificatio
8、ncanbeusedasconceptualframeworktovariouslanguagelearningtasks.Theypointedoutthatmetacogintivewereusedtodescribetheexecutiveskillsinvolvingplanning,monitoringorevaluatingsuccessfullearningactivitywhilecognitivestrategieswererelevanttocognitiveprocess,suchasperceivingandproblem-solving,whichfacilitate
9、dtogaininformationtoimprovelearning.Whatsmore,social/affectivestrategieswererelatedtomentalorpsychologicalprocess,including“cooperation,questionforclarificationandself-talkOMallyandChamot,1990,p.44.Oxford1990,p.35-55developedtheirtheoryandcategorizedlearningstrategiesintotwomaingroups,directstrategi
10、esandindirectstrategies.Inhissubcategories,memory,cognitiveandcompensationstrategieswereunderdirectgroup,wherasmeta-cognitive,affectiveandsocialstrategieswereunderindirectgroup.Stern1992,pp.262-266furtherdevelopedOxfordstheoryanddividedlanguagelearningstrategiesintofivecategories:“managementplanning
11、strategies,cognitivestrategies,communicative-experientialstrategies,interpersonalandaffectivestrategies.However,theclassificationwasnotclear.Forexample,interpersonalstrategiesmayoverlapaffectivestrategies.Insomesituation,itisimpossibletodrawaclear-cutlinebetweentheabove-mentionedfivekindsofstrategie
12、s.CohenandWen2000groupedlearningstrategiesintotwoclasses:languagelearningstrategiesandlanguageusestrategies,whichseemstobemorecomprehensiveandconcise,butitisdifficulttodistinguishthetwotypesoflanguagelearningstrategiesinaparticularlanguagelearningactivity,especiallyinthesecondorforeignlanguagelearni
13、ngcontext.TheresearchinthispaperwilladoptOxfordsmodelbecausemajorityofresearchersandscholarsbelievethatlanguageshouldbeusedforcommunication,whichexactlytheemphasisofOxfordstheory.endprint3.FactorsInfluencinglanguageLearningStrategiesAsahumanbeing,eachindividualmayapplylanguagelearningstrategiestocop
14、ewithdifferentlearningdifficulties.ThisstudyreviewsthefactorsinfluencingtheselecionoflanguagelearningstrategiesofbusinessEnglishmajorstoenhancetheEnglishcompetencyofbusinessEnglishmajors.3.1GenderasadeterminingfactorZheng2020provedthatfemaleandmalelanguagelearnersfavoreddifferentlanguagestrategiesan
15、dfemaleleanerersdevotedmoretimetolanguagelearningandusedmorelanguagelearningstrategies.Theresultconfirmedthegeneralbeliefthatfemalelearnerscaredmoreaboutlanguagelearningandlanguageusethanmalestudents.Inhisfinding,femalelearnerslikedtousemorememorystrategies,compensationandaffectivestrategiesthanmale
16、participantsinthestudy.Thus,womenandmenhavebornhumannatureinlanguagelearning,whichneedstobetakenintoconsiderationwhenexploringthefactorsinfluencingtheselectionoflanguagelearningstrategiesofbusinessEnglishmajors.3.2LanguageproficiencyasadeterminingfactorHan2020conductedanempiricalstudytoinvestigateEnglishlearningstrategiesbetweenhighandlowscoregroupofcollegeEnglishstudents.Thefindingrevealedthathighproficiencylearnersusedstrategymorefreq
