3、eirownproducts.Aframeworkprovidesdeveloperswithasetofbackbonecomponentsthathavethefollowingcharacteristics:1. Theyareknowntoworkwellinotherapplications.2. Theyarereadytousewiththenextproject.3. Theycanalsobeusedbyotherteamsintheorganization.Frameworksaretheclassicbuild-versus-buyproposition.Ifyoubui
4、ldit,youwillunderstanditwhenyouaredonebuthowlongwillitbebeforeyoucanrollyourown?Ifyoubuyit,youwillhavetoclimbthelearningcurveandhowlongisthatgoingtotake?Thereisnorightanswerhere,butmostobserverswouldagreethatframeworkssuchasStrutsprovideasignificantreturnoninvestmentcomparedtostartingfromscratch,esp
5、eciallyforlargerprojects.Othertypesofframeworks:Theideaofaframeworkappliesnotonlytoapplicationsbuttoapplicationcomponentsaswell.Throughoutthisarticle,weintroduceothertypesofframeworksthatyoucanusewithStruts.TheseincludetheLucenesearchengine,theScaffoldtoolkit,theStrutsvalidator,andtheTilestaglibrary
6、.Likeapplicationframeworks,thesetoolsprovidesemi-completeversionsofasubsystemthatcanbespecializedtoprovideacustomcomponent.Someframeworkshavebeenlinkedtoaproprietarydevelopmentenvironment.ThisisnotthecasewithStrutsoranyoftheotherframeworksshowninthisbook.YoucanuseanydevelopmentenvironmentwithStruts:
7、VisualAgeforJava,JBuilder,Eclipse,Emacs,andTextpadareallpopularchoicesamongStrutsdevelopers.IfyoucanuseitwithJava,youcanuseitwithStruts.Enablingtechnologies:ApplicationsdevelopedwithStrutsarebasedonanumberofenablingtechnologies.ThesecomponentsarenotspecifictoStrutsandunderlieeveryJavawebapplication.
8、AreasonthatdevelopersuseframeworkslikeStrutsistohidethenastydetailsbehindacronymslikeHTTP,CGI,andJSP.AsaStrutsdeveloper,youdontneedtobeanalphabetsoupguru,butaworkingknowledgeofthesebasetechnologiescanhelpyoudevisecreativesolutionstotrickyproblems.HypertextTransferProtocol(HTTP):Whenmediatingtalksbet
9、weennations,diplomatsoftenfollowaformalprotocol.Diplomaticprotocolsaredesignedtoavoidmisunderstandingsandtokeepnegotiationsfrombreakingdown.Inasimilarvein,whencomputersneedtotalk,theyalsofollowaformalprotocol.Theprotocoldefineshowdataistransmittedandhowtodecodeitonceitarrives.WebapplicationsusetheHy
10、pertextTransferProtocol(HTTP)tomovedatabetweenthebrowserrunningonyourcomputerandtheapplicationrunningontheserver.ManyserverapplicationscommunicateusingprotocolsotherthanHTTP.Someofthesemaintainanongoingconnectionbetweenthecomputers.Theapplicationserverknowsexactlywhoisconnectedatalltimesandcantellwh
11、enaconnectionisdropped.Becausetheyknowthestateofeachconnectionandtheidentityofeachpersonusingit,theseareknownasstatefulprotocols.Bycontrast,HTTPisknownasastatelessprotocol.AnHTTPserverwillacceptanyrequestfromanyclientandwillalwaysprovidesometypeofresponse,eveniftheresponseisjusttosayno.Withouttheove
12、rheadofnegotiatingandretainingaconnection,statelessprotocolscanhandlealargevolumeofrequests.ThisisonereasonwhytheInternethasbeenabletoscaletomillionsofcomputers.AnotherreasonHTTPhasbecometheuniversalstandardisitssimplicity.AnHTTPrequestlookslikeanordinarytextdocument.Thishasmadeiteasyforapplications
13、tomakeHTTPrequests.YoucanevensendanHTTPrequestbyhandusingastandardutilitysuchasTelnet.WhentheHTTPresponsecomesback,itisalsoinplaintextthatdeveloperscanread.ThefirstlineintheHTTPrequestcontainsthemethod,followedbythelocationoftherequestedresourceandtheversionofHTTP.ZeroormoreHTTPrequestheadersfollowt
14、heinitialline.TheHTTPheadersprovideadditionalinformationtotheserver.Thiscanincludethebrowsertypeandversion,acceptabledocumenttypes,andthebrowserscookies,justtonameafew.Ofthesevenrequestmethods,GETandPOSTarebyfarthemostpopular.Oncetheserverhasreceivedandservicedtherequest,itwillissueanHTTPresponse.Th
15、efirstlineintheresponseiscalledthestatuslineandcarriestheHTTPprotocolversion,anumericstatus,andabriefdescriptionofthestatus.Followingthestatusline,theserverwillreturnasetofHTTPresponseheadersthatworkinawaysimilartotherequestheaders.Aswementioned,HTTPdoesnotpreservestateinformationbetweenrequests.The
16、serverlogstherequest,sendstheresponse,andgoesblissfullyontothenextrequest.Whilesimpleandefficient,astatelessprotocolisproblematicfordynamicapplicationsthatneedtokeeptrackoftheirusers.(Ignoranceisnotalwaysbliss.CookiesandURLrewritingaretwocommonwaystokeeptrackofusersbetweenrequests.Acookieisaspecialpacketofinformationontheuserscomputer.URLrewritingstoresaspecialreferenceinthepageaddressthataJavaservercanusetotrackusers.Neitherapproachisseam
