They bravely break up the rules and principles of the former poetry, and make a reformation in both content and style. As Wordsworth says that all good poetry is fr
3、om the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, which is accumulated from tranquility. Wordsworth usually chooses the humblest and commonest objects as his subject images, and uses real language close to people to describe them all the time. Likewise, Whitman selects the common leaves as his essen
4、tial image in his masterpiece Leaves of Gras, swhich stands for the individual self and the “en-masse” as well. Whitman criticizes the concept of “art for arts sake”, putting forward the idea that literary composition should be for life.Living under the circumstances of social turbulence and high ec
5、onomical and cultural development, Wordsworths and Whitman s poems take on different colors of periods. In this paper, through analyzing the elements influencing the alteration of Wordsworths and Whitmans poetic ideas and comparing their similarities and differences in literary themes, we will stren

10、he new age of Romanticism, which is one of the most important periods in either England or America, stretching from the end of the 18th century to the mid-19th century. Wordsworth breaks down the restriction of classicalism，focusing his attention on the upper-class no longer, and Whitman struggles t
11、o get rid of the influence of European poetry, realizing the transition from transcendentalism to realism. What they advocate are “freedom , equality and fraternity”, echoing the core of Romanticism.In the past decades, many experts have done the researches about Wordsworth and Whitman separately, s
12、uch as Wordsworths naturalism, how he views the relationship between individuals and nature, Whitmans position in the poetic world, how his nationalism is embodied in Leaves of Gras, stheir innovation in wring style and language and so on. All of these facilitate the further study on their poems.To
13、accomplish a comparative analysis of Wordsworth and Whitman, two aspects are necessary. First, several similarities between the two will be pointed in Chapter two, including their social background, the influential factors for changing their poetic ideas, that is, the French Revolution and the war b
14、etween England and France, the Civil War happened in 1861-1865 of America. Another similarity is the poetic theory, which describes in both facial objects and main literary concepts. By contrast, Chapter three elaborates their differences in themes, which includes Wordsworths naturalism, Whitmans pa
15、triotismand democratic ideals, and writing styles.At last, the conclusion is the distillation of the whole paper. It talks about the realistic meaning of Wordsworth and Whitmans works, which not only represe nt the advancement of English and American literature, but also become the significant power of pushing the historical progress.
