3、asinmyearlytwenties,stilltryingtofigureoutwhoIwas;stillsearchingforapurposetomylife.ItwasinneighborhoodsnotfarfromherewhereIbeganworkingwithchurchgroupsintheshadowsofclosedsteelmills.ItwasonthesestreetswhereIwitnessedthepoweroffaith,andthequietdignityofworkingpeopleinthefaceofstruggleandloss.Thisisw
4、hereIlearnedthatchangeonlyhappenswhenordinarypeoplegetinvolved,getengaged,andcometogethertodemandit.AftereightyearsasyourPresident,Istillbelievethat.Anditsnotjustmybelief.ItsthebeatingheartofourAmericanideaourboldexperimentinself-government.Itstheconvictionthatweareallcreatedequal,endowedbyourCreato
5、rwithcertainunalienablerights,amongthemlife,liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness.Itstheinsistencethattheserights,whileself-evident,haveneverbeenself-executing;thatWe,thePeople,throughtheinstrumentofourdemocracy,canformamoreperfectunion.ThisisthegreatgiftourFoundersgaveus.Thefreedomtochaseourinpidualdrea
6、msthroughoursweat,toil,andimaginationandtheimperativetostrivetogetheraswell,toachieveagreatergood.For240years,ournationscalltocitizenshiphasgivenworkandpurposetoeachnewgeneration.Itswhatledpatriotstochooserepublicovertyranny,pioneerstotrekwest,slavestobravethatmakeshiftrailroadtofreedom.Itswhatpulle
7、dimmigrantsandrefugeesacrossoceansandtheRioGrande,pushedwomentoreachfortheballot,poweredworkerstoorganize.ItswhyGIsgavetheirlivesatOmahaBeachandIwoJima;IraqandAfghanistanandwhymenandwomenfromSelmatoStonewallwerepreparedtogivetheirsaswell.SothatswhatwemeanwhenwesayAmericaisexceptional.Notthatournatio
8、nhasbeenflawlessfromthestart,butthatwehaveshownthecapacitytochange,andmakelifebetterforthosewhofollow.Yes,ourprogresshasbeenuneven.Theworkofdemocracyhasalwaysbeenhard,contentiousandsometimesbloody.Foreverytwostepsforward,itoftenfeelswetakeonestepback.ButthelongsweepofAmericahasbeendefinedbyforwardmo
9、tion,aconstantwideningofourfoundingcreedtoembraceall,andnotjustsome.IfIhadtoldyoueightyearsagothatAmericawouldreverseagreatrecession,rebootourautoindustry,andunleashthelongeststretchofjobcreationinourhistoryifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldopenupanewchapterwiththeCubanpeople,shutdownIransnuclearweaponsprogra
10、mwithoutfiringashot,andtakeoutthemastermindof9/11ifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldwinmarriageequality,andsecuretherighttohealthinsuranceforanother20millionofourfellowcitizensyoumighthavesaidoursightsweresetalittletoohigh.Butthatswhatwedid.Thatswhatyoudid.Youwerethechange.Youansweredpeopleshopes,andbecauseofy
11、ou,byalmosteverymeasure,Americaisabetter,strongerplacethanitwaswhenwestarted.Intendays,theworldwillwitnessahallmarkofourdemocracy:thepeacefultransferofpowerfromonefreely-electedpresidenttothenext.IcommittedtoPresident-ElectTrumpthatmyadministrationwouldensurethesmoothestpossibletransition,justasPres
12、identBushdidforme.Becauseitsuptoallofustomakesureourgovernmentcanhelpusmeetthemanychallengeswestillface.Wehavewhatweneedtodoso.Afterall,weremainthewealthiest,mostpowerful,andmostrespectednationonEarth.Ouryouthanddrive,ourpersityandopenness,ourboundlesscapacityforriskandreinventionmeanthatthefuturesh
13、ouldbeours.Butthatpotentialwillberealizedonlyifourdemocracyworks.Onlyifourpoliticsreflectsthedecencyoftheourpeople.Onlyifallofus,regardlessofourpartyaffiliationorparticularinterest,helprestorethesenseofcommonpurposethatwesobadlyneedrightnow.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontonightthestateofourdemocracy.Unders
14、tand,democracydoesnotrequireuniformity.Ourfoundersquarreledandcompromised,andexpectedustodothesame.Buttheyknewthatdemocracydoesrequireabasicsenseofsolidaritytheideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,weareallinthistogether;thatweriseorfallasone.Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythatthreatenedtorup
15、turethatsolidarity.Thebeginningofthiscenturyhasbeenoneofthosetimes.Ashrinkingworld,growinginequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorismtheseforceshaventjusttestedoursecurityandprosperity,butourdemocracyaswell.Andhowwemeetthesechallengestoourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,and
16、creategoodjobs,andprotectourhomeland.Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.Ourdemocracywontworkwithoutasensethateveryonehaseconomicopportunity.Today,theeconomyisgrowingagain;wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfallingagain.Thewealthyarepayingafairershareoftaxesevenasthestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemploymentrateisnearaten-yearlow.Theuninsuredratehasnever,everbee
