3、eswhichmerelyofferentriesandexamples,andteachersexplanationswhicharemainlybasedonexperiences.Theappearanceofcorpuslinguisticsprovidesanewperspectivetostudysynonym.Throughanumberofstatisticaldataanalysis,L2learnerscanrealizesthespecificdifferencesofsynonymsinconcretecontexts.basedoncorpuslinguistics,
4、thepaperplanstoanalyzeapairofsynonymSTARTBEGINthroughquantitativeandqualitativeanalysis.ThroughstatisticalretrievalofFLOB,theauthoraimstorevealthediscriminationsofSTARTBEGINinordertohelpL2learnersunderstandthedifferentusesofSTARTBEGINandalsoofferanewperspectivetostudysynonyms.2.LiteraturereviewInthe
5、eyesofordinarypeople,ithasoftenbeentakenforgrantedthatSTARTBEGINcanbeusedinterchangeably.However,linguistsathomeandabroadhadmadeplentyofresearchesbasedoncorporaandtheresultsshowedthattheusagesofSTARTBEGINstillhaddifferencesinsomeaspects.TherepresentativeresearcheshaddonebyDouglasBiberandChristianMai
6、r.InCorpusLinguistics,DouglasBiber2000hadcomparedtheusagesofSTARTBEGINandfoundthatBEGINwasmoreinclinedtoexistwithtodowhileSTARTwasmoreoftenusedwiththeotherthreestructures.Inaddition,ChristianMair2020hadmadeacomparisonofSTARTBEGINinhispaperfromtheperspectiveofgrammarandsociallinguistics.Domesticlingu
7、istsalsohaddoneamountofresearchesaboutSTARTBEGIN,suchasLu2020etc.ThepreviouslinguistsmostcompareSTARTBEGINintwodomains,andtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTRATandBEGINisrarelymentioned.ThusthispaperaimstorevealthedifferencesofSTARTBEGINandtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTARTandBEGIN.3.D
8、ataandMethodologyThedataofthispapercomesfromFLOBFreiburg-LOBCorpusofBritishEnglishwhichconsistsof500textsofBritishmagazinesandnewspapersin1991and1992.Withavocabularyof10,000,000words,FLOBisquiterepresentativeinstudyingEnglishlinguisticfeaturesandusages.Here,theFLOBcorpushasalreadybeentagged.Monoconc
9、areusedinthepapertoprocessthefrequenciesofSTARTBEGINandtheirfourgrammaticalcombinationsrespectively.Chi-squaretestisadoptedtoexaminewhethersignificantdifferenceexistsintheusagesofSTART,BEGINandbetweenSTARTBGEGIN.Chi-squarevaluewhichiscalculatedbysoftwareSPSSisthestandardfortestingifasignificantdiffe
10、renceisemerged.Whensig.0.05,significantdifferenceexist;whensig.0.05,thereisnosignificantdifference.4.ResultsandAnalysis4.1StatisticalanalysisofSTARTBEGINAccordingtothecorpusdata,theauthorfindsthatSTARTBEGINhavefourgrammaticalcombinations,namely,STARTBEGIN+todo;STARTBEGIN+doing;STARTBEGIN+noun;STARTB
11、EGINasViintransitiveverb.WithMonoconcthefrequenciesofSTARTanditsfourgrammaticalcombinationsinFLOBarecountedinTable1.AlthoughthefrequencyofSTARTasVicannotbecountedbyMonoconc,thedatacanbeobtainedbydeductingthefrequencyofotherthreeusagefromthewholefrequencyofSTART.Accordingtothestatisticresultofmonocon
12、c,thetotalfrequencyofSTARTis317withSTART+todoaccountingfor48times,START+doing55times,START+noun13times,andSTARTasVi201times.Meanwhile,BEGINonlyappearsfor169timesincludingBEGIN+todo72times,BEGIN+doing2times,BEGIN+noun1timesandBEGINasVi94times.ForSTARTsfourusages,thechi-squarevalueis0.000TheChi-square
13、valueofBEGINsfourusagesindicatesthatthemostpopularusagesofBEGINareBEGINasViandBEGIN+todo.AndBEGINisseldomusedinBEGIN+nounandBEGIN+doingstructure.Andthechi-squarevalueis0.0004.2ComparisonofSTARTBEGINIntheChi-squaretestofSTARTBEGIN,thechi-squarevalueis0.000WhenSTARTisusedasVi,itoftendescribestheinitia
