3、eswhichmerelyofferentriesandexamples，andteachersexplanationswhicharemainlybasedonexperiences.Theappearanceofcorpuslinguisticsprovidesanewperspectivetostudysynonym.Throughanumberofstatisticaldataanalysis，L2learnerscanrealizesthespecificdifferencesofsynonymsinconcretecontexts.basedoncorpuslinguistics，
4、thepaperplanstoanalyzeapairofsynonymSTARTBEGINthroughquantitativeandqualitativeanalysis.ThroughstatisticalretrievalofFLOB，theauthoraimstorevealthediscriminationsofSTARTBEGINinordertohelpL2learnersunderstandthedifferentusesofSTARTBEGINandalsoofferanewperspectivetostudysynonyms.2.LiteraturereviewInthe
5、eyesofordinarypeople，ithasoftenbeentakenforgrantedthatSTARTBEGINcanbeusedinterchangeably.However，linguistsathomeandabroadhadmadeplentyofresearchesbasedoncorporaandtheresultsshowedthattheusagesofSTARTBEGINstillhaddifferencesinsomeaspects.TherepresentativeresearcheshaddonebyDouglasBiberandChristianMai
6、r.InCorpusLinguistics，DouglasBiber2000hadcomparedtheusagesofSTARTBEGINandfoundthatBEGINwasmoreinclinedtoexistwithtodowhileSTARTwasmoreoftenusedwiththeotherthreestructures.Inaddition，ChristianMair2020hadmadeacomparisonofSTARTBEGINinhispaperfromtheperspectiveofgrammarandsociallinguistics.Domesticlingu
7、istsalsohaddoneamountofresearchesaboutSTARTBEGIN，suchasLu2020etc.ThepreviouslinguistsmostcompareSTARTBEGINintwodomains，andtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTRATandBEGINisrarelymentioned.ThusthispaperaimstorevealthedifferencesofSTARTBEGINandtheinternaldifferencesamongtheusagesofSTARTandBEGIN.3.D
8、ataandMethodologyThedataofthispapercomesfromFLOBFreiburg-LOBCorpusofBritishEnglishwhichconsistsof500textsofBritishmagazinesandnewspapersin1991and1992.Withavocabularyof10，000，000words，FLOBisquiterepresentativeinstudyingEnglishlinguisticfeaturesandusages.Here，theFLOBcorpushasalreadybeentagged.Monoconc
9、areusedinthepapertoprocessthefrequenciesofSTARTBEGINandtheirfourgrammaticalcombinationsrespectively.Chi-squaretestisadoptedtoexaminewhethersignificantdifferenceexistsintheusagesofSTART，BEGINandbetweenSTARTBGEGIN.Chi-squarevaluewhichiscalculatedbysoftwareSPSSisthestandardfortestingifasignificantdiffe
10、renceisemerged.Whensig.0.05，significantdifferenceexist；whensig.0.05，thereisnosignificantdifference.4.ResultsandAnalysis4.1StatisticalanalysisofSTARTBEGINAccordingtothecorpusdata，theauthorfindsthatSTARTBEGINhavefourgrammaticalcombinations，namely，STARTBEGIN+todo；STARTBEGIN+doing；STARTBEGIN+noun；STARTB
11、EGINasViintransitiveverb.WithMonoconcthefrequenciesofSTARTanditsfourgrammaticalcombinationsinFLOBarecountedinTable1.AlthoughthefrequencyofSTARTasVicannotbecountedbyMonoconc，thedatacanbeobtainedbydeductingthefrequencyofotherthreeusagefromthewholefrequencyofSTART.Accordingtothestatisticresultofmonocon
12、c，thetotalfrequencyofSTARTis317withSTART+todoaccountingfor48times，START+doing55times，START+noun13times，andSTARTasVi201times.Meanwhile，BEGINonlyappearsfor169timesincludingBEGIN+todo72times，BEGIN+doing2times，BEGIN+noun1timesandBEGINasVi94times.ForSTARTsfourusages，thechi-squarevalueis0.000TheChi-square
13、valueofBEGINsfourusagesindicatesthatthemostpopularusagesofBEGINareBEGINasViandBEGIN+todo.AndBEGINisseldomusedinBEGIN+nounandBEGIN+doingstructure.Andthechi-squarevalueis0.0004.2ComparisonofSTARTBEGINIntheChi-squaretestofSTARTBEGIN，thechi-squarevalueis0.000WhenSTARTisusedasVi，itoftendescribestheinitia
