But a new vehicle from Japans Hitachi has greatly reduced the form factor, essentially delivering a personal car that d

Its equipped with GPS to find its way and relies on cameras and 2-D and 3-D laser distance sensors to avoid obstacles (sometimes also known as passers-by) and slow down in narrow spaces. Gyro(回转仪) sensors help it stay upright on rough surfaces. Passengers climb into Ropits thr

9、ough a front door and choose their destination from a touch screen. Ropits takes them from there. In case of emergencies, riders can control the vehicle with a joystick(操纵杆) located in the driver s cabin. Hitachi displayed Ropits in the Japanese city of Tsukuha and said its aimed at the elderly and

Its also easy to imagine it taking off as a next-generation Segway for the urban crowd, though theres no word yet on when you might be avoiding the 450-pound device on a sidewalk near you.
