1、 responsibilityisabadgeofhonourforyouth(96年“21世纪杯全国大学生英语演讲比赛”二等奖获得者，北京外国语大学徐义成)facingthisaudienceonthestage,ihavetheexcitingfeelingofparticipatinginthemarchofhistory,forwhatwearefacingtodayismorethanamerecompetitionorcontest.itisanassemblyofsomeofchinasmosttalentedandmotivatedpeople,representativeso
2、fayoungergenerationthatarepreparingthemselvesforthecomingofanewcentury.imgratefulthativebeengiventhisopportunity,atsuchahistoricmoment,tostandhereasaspokesmanofmygenerationandtotakeaseriouslookbackatthepast15years,acrucialperiodforeveryoneofusandforthisnationaswell.thoughitisonlywithinmypowertotella
3、boutmypersonalexperience,andonlyatinyfragmentofitatthat,itstillrepresents,ibelieve,therootofaspiritwhichhasbeenessentialtomeandtoallthepeoplebredbythepast15years.inmyelementaryyears,therewasalittlegirlintheclasswhoworkedveryhardbutsomehowcouldneverdosatisfactorilyinherlessons.theteacheraskedmetohelp
4、her,anditwasobviousthatsheexpectedalotfromme.butasayoungboy,restless,thoughtless,ialwaystriedtoevadehersoastogetmoretimetoenjoymyself.onedaybeforethefinalexam,shecameuptomeandsaid,couldyoupleaseexplainthistome?iwantverymuchtodobetterthistime.istartedexplaining,andfinishedinahurry.pretendingnottonoti
5、ceherstillconfusedeyes,iranoffquickly.natsurprisingly,sheagaindidverybadlyintheexam.andtwomonthslater,atthebeginningofthenewsemester,wordcameofherdeathofbloodcancer.nooneeverknewaboutthelittletaskifailedtofulfill,buticouldntforgivemyself.isimplycouldntforgethereyes,whichseemtobeasking,whydidntyoudoa
6、littlemoretohelpme,whenitwassoeasyforyou?whydidntyouunderstandalittlebetterthetrustplacedinyou,sothatiwouldnothavetoleavethisworldinsuchpainandregret?iwasabouteightornineyearsoldatthattime,butinawayitwastheverystartingpointofmylife,foribegantounderstandthewordresponsibilityandtolearntoalwaysdomyduti
7、esfaithfullyanddevotedly,fortheimplicationsofthatsacredwordhasdawnedonmethemutualneedandtrustofpeople,theco-operationandinter-reliancewhicharetheveryfoundationofhumansociety.laterinmylife,icontinuedtoexperiencemanyfailures.butneveragaindidifeelthatregretwhichstruckmeatthedeathofthegirl,foritmakesmyh
8、eartsatisfiedtothinkthatihavealwaysdoneeverythinginmypowertofulfillmyresponsibilitiesasbestican.asigrewup,changedandimprovedbythisincidentandmanyothersimilarones,ibegantoperceivethechangestakingplacearoundmeandtofindthatsociety,inaway,wasinitsformativeyearslikemyself.newbuildings,newcommoditiesandne
9、wfashionsappeareveryday.newideas,newinformation,newtechnologies.peoplecantalkwitheachotherfromanycorneroftheearthinamatterofseconds.societyisbecomingmorecompetitive.wordslikeindividualityandcreativityaregettingmoreemphasisandmorepeoplearerewardedfortheirhardworkandefforts.suchistheerainwhichthisgene
10、ration,growsandmatures.suchistheerainwhichthisgenerationwilltakeoverthenationfromourfathersandlearntorunit.yetinthemeantime,manyproblemsstillexist.welearnthatcrimestakeplaceinbroaddaylightwithcrowdsofpeoplelookingonandnotassisting.wehearthattherearestillabout1millionchildreninthiscountrywhocantevena
11、ffordtogotoelementaryschoolswhileenormoussumsofmoneyarebeingsquanderedawayondinnerpartiesandluxurycars.webuyshoddymedicines,ormerelyworthlessjunkinthenameofmedicines,thataggravate,ratherthanalleviateourdiseasessincemoney,manypeoplebelieve,isthemostimportantthingintheworldthatmustbemade,evenattheexpe
12、nseofmoralityandresponsibility.suchanera,therefore,determinesthatweareagenerationwithakeenersenseofcompetitionandefficiencyandagreaterreadinesstothinkcriticallyandactcreatively.suchanera,furthermore,demands,thatweareagenerationwithaclearperceptionofourhistoricalresponsibilityandanaggressivewilltotak
13、eactionandsolvetheproblems.historyhaslongbeenpreparingthesequalitiesinthisgenerationanditisnowcallingusforwardtogivetestimonytoourpatriotismandheroismtowardsthisnationandallhumanity.standingherenow,ithinkofthepast15yearsofmylifeasanordinarystudent.probablyillbeanordinarymanfortherestofmylife.butthis
14、doesntdiscouragemeany,foriknowthatwithmysenseofresponsibilityanddevotedeffortstoalwaysstrive,forthebest,itsgoingtobeameaningfulandworthwhilelifethatiwillbeliving.standingherenow,ithinkofthepast15yearsofthisnation,whichhasachievedgreatnessthatinspiredmillionsofpeopleofmyage,mostofwhomwillnotattainfam
15、eorprestigeandonlyafewofwhomwillberememberedbyposterity.butthatdoesntdiscourageusany,becauseweknowthattheworldwatches,theworldlistens,theworldiswaitingtoseewherethisnationwillbeheadinginatimeofrichopportunitiesandfiercecompetition.icanteverforgetthatlittlegirlinmyclasswhocouldnthadthesameopportuniti
16、esasanyofusheretoenjoyawonderfullifetodayandahopefulworldtomorrow.itisthesacredresponsibilityofthisgenerationtofaceuptothechallengesofthenewcenturyandtodevoteoursweatandblood,ourwisdomandpassion,tothehistoriccauseofmakingthisnationagreaterandhappierlandforeveryoneofus.wearenotgoingtoevadethatresponsibility.wearegoingtoletpeop
