lines,but I did not understand a word.Every day I thought about postcards.My holidayspassed quickly,but I did not send any cards to myfriends.On the last day I made a big decision.Igot up early and bought thirty-seven cards.Ispent the whole day in my room,but I did notwrite a single card!Lesson 4 An exciting trip1 have just received a letter from my brother,Tim.He is in Australia.He has been there fbr sixmonths.Tim is an engineer.He is working fbr abig firm and he has already visited a greatnumber of different places in Australia.He hasjust bought an Australian car and has gone toAlice wrong numbersMr.James Scott has a garage in Silbury andnow he has just bought another garage in Pinhurst.Pinhurst is only five miles from Silbury,but Mr.Scott cannot get a telephone for his new garage,so he has just bought twelve pigeons.Yesterday,apigeon carried the first message from Pinhurst ioSilbury.The bird covered the distance in threeminutes.Up to now,Mr.Scott has sent a greatmany requests fbr spare parts and other urgentmessages from one garage to the other.In thisway,he has begun his own private telephoneservice.Lesson 6 Percy ButtonsI have just moved to a house in Bridge Street.Yesterday a beggar knocked at my door.He askedme for a meal and a glass of beer.In return forthis,(he beggar stood on his head and sang songs.I gave him a meal.He ate the food and drank thebeer.Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocketand went away.Later a neighbor told me abouthim.Everybody knows him.His name is PercyButtons.He calls at every house in the street oncea month and always asks for a meal and a glass ofbeer.Lesson 7 Too lateThe plane was late and detectives werewaiting at the airport all morning.They wereexpecting a valuable parcel of diamonds fromSouth Africa.A few hours earlier,someone hadtold the police that thieves would try to steal thediamonds.When the plane arrived,some of thedetectives were waiting inside the main buildingwhile others were waiting on the airfield.lvomen took the parcel off the plane and carried itinto the Customs House.While two detectiveswere keeping guard at the door,two othersopened the parcel.To their surprise,the preciousparcel was full of stones and sand!Lesson 8 The best and the worstJoe Sanders has the most beautiful garden inour town.Nearly everybody enters for TheNicest Garden Competition each year,but Joewins every time.Bill Friths garden is larger thanJoes.Bill works harder than Joe and grows moreflowers and vegetables,but Joes garden is moreinteresting.He has made neat paths and has builta wooden bridge over a pool.I like gardens too,but I do not like hard work.Every year I enter forthe garden competition loo,and I always win alittle prize for the worst garden in the town!Lesson 9 A cold welcomeOn Wednesday evening,we went lo theTown Hall.It was the last day of the year and alarge crowd of people had gathered under theTown Hall clock.It would strike twelve in twentyminutes
