2、apaternalunclewhowasemotionallycold.Notwantingtobecomealawyerlikeothermeninhisfamily,Maughameventuallytrainedandqualifiedasadoctor.Thefirstrunofhisfirstnovel,LizaofLambeth(1897),soldoutsorapidlythatMaughamgaveupmedicinetowritefull-time.DuringtheFirstWorldWar,heservedwiththeRedCrossandintheambulancec
