The Characteristics of Kindergarten Teachers in Hong Kong 香港幼稚園教師的特點Kindergarten education is widely perceived to be beneficial to the development of pre-primary children. In September 1996, there were 180 771 kindergarten pupils in Hong Kong, accounting for 78% of the children aged企om3 to 5. With the increasing significance of kindergarten education, kindergarten teachers in Hong Kong also experienced some changes in terms of quantity and quality. This article analyses the characteristics of kindergarten teachers in the past eight years. 幼稚園教育有助於學前兒童的成長,已是眾所周知。

Introduction 1.1 The Statistics Section of the Education Department has been conducting the Teacher Survey on an annual basis since 1979 to collect information on teachers in Hong Kong. The survey covers all kindergartens and primary and secondary day schools in Hong Kong. 1.2 The figures on kindergarten teachers presented in this article are extracted from the Teacher Surveys. Ho wever, as there has been a change in the types of information on kindergarten teachers in the Teacher Survey from 1989 on wards, there was a discontinuity on statistics preceding 1989 and those from 1989 on wards. Under the circumstance, this article only focuses on analysis of the characteristics of kindergarten teachers in the recent eight years. 2. Concepts and Deflnitions 2.1 Kindergartens in Hong Kong are all operated by the private sector. There are t wo main categories of kindergartens, namely non- profit-making kindergartens and other kindergartens. The former refers to those kindergartens run by charitable organisations. Al1 the fees and charges collected from pupils are used for education pu中oseswithin the kindergartens concemed. They are also eligible for reimbursement of rent and rates from the Education Department. 2.2 Kindergarten teachers refer to all principals and teaching staff in kindergartens. This is because, in a fe w cases, some teachers served as principals and vice versa. For easy interpretation, kindergarten principals were also counted as kindergarten teachers. 2.3 Kindergarten location was adopted as the survey unit in the Teacher Survey but intemational school locations were not covered in the survey. Number of kindergarten teachers 3.1 Over the past eight years, the total number of kindergarten teachers increased by 18.2% from 7 138 in 1989月o to 8 436 in 1996/97. Analysed by type of kindergarten, the number of teachers in non-pro fit-making kindergartens also sho wed an up ward trend. It rose from 3 557 in 1989/90 to 5 082 in 1996/97 with a 42.9% gro wth. Moreover, the proportion of teachers in non-pro fit making kindergartens also increased. In 1996/97, over 60% of kindergarten teachers were working in non-profit-making kindergartens. Conversely, the number and proportion of teachers in other kindergartens steadily decreased. ( Table 1) 3. 幼稚園教師人數3.1 過去八年, 幼稚園教師 總 數由一九八九/九零 年的7 138人上升至一九 九 六/九七年的8 436人, 增幅 為18.2%。
