4、 this style of service delivery.There is no doubt that integrated working can often bring benefi ts for service users but should this always be an unquestioned assumption? This chapter will outline the different ways that services and practitioners can work together and discuss the notion of the pre

5、viously outlined question. To achieve the best outcomes for service providers and users requires consideration of a range of factors.These will be dis- cussed and strategies, which can be utilised by services and practitioners to achieve effective working practices,discussed in the context of differ

6、ent services. At the end of this chapter,the reader should have achieved the following out- comes: have explored a range of defi nitions used to signal integrated working and what these can mean in practice; understand the benefi ts that can come from integrated working; be able to describe the fact

7、ors that contribute to affective integrated working. Why work together? As the introduction to the book outlined,much of the emphasis for increased integration of services and for practitioners to work together has come from 3 1 Working in an integrated way1 past failures that have had a range of co

8、nsequences for service providers and users.And at worst these failures have resulted in the death of children.This point was clearly illustrated in the Laming report (2003),which made clear that joint agency working and more effective exchange of information sharing could have prevented the death of

9、 Victoria Climbi.In addition to addressing failures,it is also important to see the potential benefi ts of working together to address social exclusion. Warmington et al. (2004) defi ne social exclusion as having reduced or no access to opportunities that connect individuals to mainstream social par

10、ticipa- tion. Policy and service developments have attempted to tackle this through a number of initiatives for children and families.These have included attempts to implement a more holistic approach to promoting health and well-being with a focus on addressing health inequalities for those living

11、in deprived areas (Health Action Zones).At a national and local level, Sure Start has aimed to develop joined-up services to meet the education,social,emotional and health needs of parents and children (Baldock et al.,2005).More recently Childrens Trusts have been set up.These have a remit of develo

12、ping responsive and effective services for children across health,social care and education at a senior level across the local authority, through the commissioning and development of current and new service provision.Thirty-fi ve were set up in 2003 as pathfi nder trusts and the intention is to have

13、 one in each area by 2008.The emphasis on developing responsive and effective services is clearly an important and admirable aim as there are over 11 million children in the United Kingdom (Shribman,2007).In many respects the expectation on services to work together can be summarised by Every Child

14、Matters outcomes,which aim for all children to: be healthy; stay safe; enjoy and achieve; make a positive contribution; achieve economic well-being. Although there are clear differences between the different forms of service pro- vision they all have one thing in common: an increased emphasis on wor

15、king together.The idea of providing joined-up services to meet joined-up needs seems both sensible and desirable.Effective partnership working can be bene- fi cial to both families and practitioners as it can enhance understanding of the family culture,deepen awareness of each situation and enhance

16、the respect for families, which is vital to enhancing parent self-effi cacy and promoting ongoing development for children (Sure Start,2000). 4Working in an integrated way It is likely that you have identifi ed a range of services and practitioners.Your list may include education,health (such as health visitors),family support and social care practitioners.What is certain is that the more children a family has or if one or more members of the family has a specia
