Sowiththatinmind,Idlikeyoujusttotakeamomenttothink,whendidyoulasttakeanytimetodonothing?Just10minutes,undisturbed?AndwhenIsaynothing,Idomeannothing.Sothatsnoemailing,texting,no

2、Inter,noTV,nochatting,noeating,noreading,notevensittingtherereminiscingaboutthepastorplanningforthefuture.Simplydoingnothing.Iseealotofveryblankfaces.(Laughter)Mythinkingis,youprobablyhavetogoalongwayback. Andthisisanextraordinarything,right?Weretalkingaboutourmind.Themind,ourmostvaluableandprecious

3、resource,throughwhichweexperienceeverysinglemomentofourlife,themindthatwerelyupontobehappy,content,emotionallystableasindividuals,andatthesametimetobekindandthoughtfulandconsiderateinourrelationshipswithothers.Thisisthesamemindthatwedependupontobefocused,creative,spontaneous,andtoperformatourverybes

4、tineverythingthatwedo.Andyet,wedonttakeanytimeouttolookafterit.Infact,wespendmoretimelookingafterourcars,ourclothesandourhairthanweokay,maybenotourhair,butyouseewhereImgoing. Theresult,ofcourse,isthatwegetstressed.Youknow,themindwhizzesawaylikeawashingmachinegoingroundandround,lotsofdifficult,confus

5、ingemotions,andwedontreallyknowhowtodealwiththat,andthesadfactisthatwearesodistractedthatwerenolongerpresentintheworldinwhichwelive.Wemissoutonthethingsthataremostimportanttous,andthecrazythingisthateverybodyjustassumes,well,thatsthewaylifeis,sowevejustkindofgottogetonwithit.Thatsreallynothowithasto

SoIwasabout11whenIwentalongtomyfirstmeditationclass.Andtrustme,ithadallthestereotypesthatyoucanimagine,thesittingcross-leggedonthefloor,theincense,theherbaltea,thevegetarians,thewholedeal,butmymomwasgoingandIwasintrigued,soIwentalongwithher.Idalsoseenafewkungfumovies,andsecretlyIkindofthoughtImi

7、ghtbeabletolearnhowtofly,butIwasveryyoungatthetime.NowasIwasthere,Iguess,likealotofpeople,Iassumedthatitwasjustanaspirinforthemind.Yougetstressed,youdosomemeditation.Ihadntreallythoughtthatitcouldbesortofpreventativeinnature,untilIwasabout20,whenanumberofthingshappenedinmylifeinquitequicksuccession,

8、reallyseriousthingswhichjustflippedmylifeupsidedownandallofasuddenIwasinundatedwiththoughts,inundatedwithdifficultemotionsthatIdidntknowhowtocopewith.EverytimeIsortofpushedonedown,anotheronewouldjustsortofpopbackupagain.Itwasareallyverystressfultime. Iguesswealldealwithstressindifferentways.Somepeop

9、lewillburythemselvesinwork,gratefulforthedistraction.Otherswillturntotheirfriends,theirfamily,lookingforsupport.Somepeoplehitthebottle,starttakingmedication.Myownwayofdealingwithitwastobeeamonk.SoIquitmydegree,IheadedofftotheHimalayas,Ibecameamonk,andIstartedstudyingmeditation. PeopleoftenaskmewhatI

10、learnedfromthattime.Well,obviouslyitchangedthings.Letsfaceit,beingacelibatemonkisgoingtochangeanumberofthings.Butitwasmorethanthat.Ittaughtme-itgavemeagreaterappreciation,anunderstandingforthepresentmoment.BythatImeannotbeinglostinthought,notbeingdistracted,notbeierwhelmedbydifficultemotions,butinst

11、eadlearninghowtobeinthehereandnow,howtobemindful,howtobepresent. Ithinkthepresentmomentissounderrated.Itsoundssoordinary,andyetwespendsolittletimeinthepresentmomentthatitsanythingbutordinary.TherewasaresearchpaperthatcameoutofHarvard,justrecently,thatsaidonaverageourmindsarelostinthoughtalmost47perc

12、entofthetime.Forty-sevenpercent.Atthesametime,thissortofconstantmind-wanderingisalsoadirectcauseofunhappiness.Nowwerenothereforthatlonganyway,buttospendalmosthalfofourlifelostinthoughtandpotentiallyquiteunhappy,dunno,itjustkindofseemstragic,actually,especiallywhentheressomethingwecandoaboutit,whenth

13、eresapositive,practical,achievable,scientificallyproventechniquewhichallowsourmindtobemorehealthy,tobemoremindfulandlessdistracted.Andthebeautyofitisthateventhoughitneedonlytakeabout10minutesaday,itimpactsourentirelife.Butweneedtoknowhowtodoit.Weneedanexercise.Weneedaframeworktolearnhowtobemoremindf

14、ul.Thatsessentiallywhatmeditationis.Itsfamiliarizingourselveswiththepresentmoment.Butwealsoneedtoknowhowtoapproachitintherightwaytogetthebestfromit.Andthatswhatthesearefor,incaseyouvebeenwondering,becausemostpeopleassumethatmeditationisallaboutstoppingthoughts,gettingridofemotions,somehowcontrolling

15、themind,butactuallyitsquitedifferentfromthat.Itsmoreaboutsteppingback,seeingthethoughtclearly,witnessingitingandgoing,emotionsingandgoingwithoutjudgment,butwitharelaxed,focusedmind. Soforexample,rightnow,ifIfocustoomuchontheballs,thentheresnowaythatIcanrelaxandtalktoyouatthesametime.Equally,ifIrelax

16、toomuchtalkingtoyou,thentheresnowayIcanfocusontheballs.Imgoingtodropthem.Nowinlife,andinmeditation,therellbetimeswhenthefocusbeesalittlebittoointense,andlifestartstofeelabitlikethis.Itsaveryunfortablewaytolivelife,whenyougetthistightandstressed.Atothertimes,wemighttakeourfootoffthegasalittlebittoomuch,andthingsjustbeeasortoflittlebitlikethis.Ofcourseinmeditation(Snores)weregoingtoendupfallingasleep.
