TheStatueofLibertymaybeoneofthemostoftenphotographedworksofartintheworld.AFrenchsculptor,FredericAugusteBartholdi,designedthestatueinthelate1800s.TodaythemonumentcontinuestopresentabeautifulsightontheNewYorkskyline.ButitcameclosetoneverarrivingintheUnitedStates. Thematerialsrequiredforbuild

3、ingtheStatueofLibertywerealmostlostatsea.In1885,theshipcarryingthosematerialsalmostsankinstormyseas.Bartholdisdreamofahugesculpturemightneverhavebeenfulfilled. Luckily,theshipsurvivedtheroughseas.ItarrivedsafelyinJuneof1885.Bythenextyear,theStatueofLibertyhadarisenonwhatwasthencalledBedloesIsland.Th

4、estatuewasofficiallyopenedthatyear.Manyyearslater,theislandwasgivenanewname:LibertyIsland. ShesaSurvivor TheStatueofLibertyhassurviveddamagecausedbytime,visitsbymillionsofpeopleandtheweather.Itstoodfirmduringadestructivestorm,HurricaneSandy,whichstrucktheEastCoastinOctoberof20XX.ButLibertyIslandsuff

5、ereddamage,requiringmajorrepairs. LadyLiberty,asmanypeoplecallthestatue,wasagiftfromthepeopleofFrance.ItsfullnameisLibertyEnlighteningtheWorld. TheUnitedStatesandFrancehavebeenfriendsandalliessincetheAmericanRevolution.FrancehelpedtheAmericancolonialarmiesdefeatBritishforces.Thewarofficiallyendedin1

6、783.Afewyearslater,theFrenchrebelledagainsttheirking. AFrenchhistorianandpoliticalleader,Edouard-ReneLefebvredeLaboulaye,hadtheideaforthestatue.In1865,hesuggestedthattheFrenchandtheAmericansbuildamonumenttogethertocelebratefreedom.Bartholdiagreedtodesignit. In1875,theFrenchestablishedanorganizationt

7、oraisemoneyforBartholdiscreation.Twoyearslater,anAmericangroupwasformedtoraisemoneytopayforapedestal.AmericanarchitectRichardMorrisHuntwaschosentodesignthissupportstructure.Thepedestalwouldstand47metershigh. InFrance,BartholdidesignedamodeloftheStatueofLiberty.Thenhebuiltaseriesoflargercopiesoftheve

8、rysmallmodelstatue.Workerscreatedawoodenformcoveredwithplasterforeachpart.Theyplaced300piecesofcopperontheforms.Thecopperskinwasabouttwoandonehalfmillimetersthick,thesameastwoAmericanpenniesplacedback-to-back. Thestatuealsoneededastructurethatcouldholditsweight-morethan200tons.FrenchengineerAlexandr

9、eGustaveEiffelcreatedthenewtechnology.Later,hedesignedthefamousEiffelTowerinParis. EiffelandothersworkedinParistoproduceastrongsupportsystemforthestatue.Thedesignalsohadtohavetheabilitytomovealittleinstrongwinds.LadyLibertyhascontinuedtostandduringmanyastorm,includingHurricaneSandy. Francehadwantedt

10、ogivethestatuetotheUnitedStatesonthe100thanniversaryoftheDeclarationofIndependence-Julyfourth,1876.Buttechnicalproblemsandlackofmoneydelayedtheproject.FrancefinallyofficiallypresentedthestatuetotheUnitedStatesinParisin1884.ButthepedestalbeingbuiltinNewYorkwasnotfinished.Notenoughmoneyhadbeendonatedt

11、opletetheproject. ThepublisheroftheNewYorkWorldnewspapercametotherescue.JosephPulitzerusedhisnewspapertopersuadeAmericanstogivemoremoneytofinishthepedestal.Hiseffortsbroughtinanother$100,000.Andthepedestalwasfinished. InFrance,workersseparatedthestatueinto350pieces,putthemonashipandsentthemacrossthe

12、ocean.Aftersurvivingtheroughseas,thestatuearrivedinNewYorkinmorethan200woodenboxes.Ittookworkersfourmonthstobuildthestatueonthepedestal. OnOctober28th,1886,PresidentGroverClevelandacceptedthestatueinaceremony.Hesaid:WewillnotforgetthatLibertyhasheremadeherhome;norshallherchosenaltarbeneglected. Thro

13、ughouthistory,theideaoflibertyhasoftenbeenrepresentedbyimagesofawoman.HistorianssaythestatuesfacewascreatedtolooklikeBartholdismother.Herrightarmholdsatorchhighintheair.HerleftarmholdsatabletwiththedateofAmericasDeclarationofIndependence-Julyfourth,1776. Onherhead,theStatueofLibertywearsacrownwithse

14、venpoints.Eachpointismeanttorepresentthelightoffreedomasitshinesonthesevenseasandsevencontinentsoftheworld.The25windowsinthecrownrepresentgemstonesfoundonEarth.Achainthatrepresentsoppressionliesbrokenatherfeet.
