3、t today is Jane Taylor, author of McBusiness, The Building of a Hamburger Empire. Welcome, Jane. W: Thank you for inviting me. M: Your book, McBusiness, is of course a history of the worlds largest restaurant chain, McDonalds. W: Thats right. M: The name everyone associates with McDonalds is Ray Kro

4、c. But McDonalds was already successful when Ray Kroc arrived, right?,TAPESCRIPT,TAPESCRIPT,W: Oh, yes. The McDonald brothers, Mac and Dick, who opened their first hamburger stand in 1940, in San Bernardino, California, had several franchisees; that is, they had sold other people the right to open M

5、cDonalds restaurants. But they also had a problem. Mac and Dick didnt like to fly. It was hard for them to expand their chain. M: Really? W: Yes. So, in 1954, Ray Kroc became the franchising agent. There were twelve McDonalds restaurants at the time. M: Twelve.,TAPESCRIPT,W: Yes, but Ray was a brill

6、iant businessman. Remember, it took the McDonald brothers seven years to go from their first fast-food outlet to twelve. By 1959, just five years after their agreement with Ray Kroc, there were one hundred McDonalds restaurants. And only one year later, Kroc had doubled the number to 200. The year a

7、fter that, Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers part of the company. M: And its the largest chain in the world.
