2、nificance and MethodologyThe significance of this dissertation lies in the dual function of theoreticalverification and historical recognition.Using foreign translation theories to develop research on typical cases in Chinesetranslated literature history, or in other words, using historical facts in

3、 Chinesetranslated literature history to verify foreign translation theories or hypotheses is asignificant way to learn and absorb foreign theories and use them for reference toestablish Chinese translation theories.On the other hand, the four booms in Chinese translation circle, especially the oned

4、uring the May 4th period, have always been the focuses of researchers. Though therealready have been so many researches, the understanding and recognition on them willbe strengthened if studied from different angles. Using foreign translation theories toexplain and study Chinese translation facts ca

5、n not only verify the effect andexplanation power of those hypotheses but also reinforced the cognition andunderstanding of Chinese translation and translated literature history.Finally there comes the qualitative analysis of this dissertation. What the researchof this dissertation concerns about is

6、 not the “translation” in its traditional meaning,namely such as those researches on translation principles, translation criticism,translation strategy, translation process, translation product and translators, but theso-called macro-translation. However, it does belong to the scope of translationre

7、search although it does not pay close attention to the specific subjects occurred intranslation process. According to Holmes famous categorydrawn by the authoraccording to Holmess paper of translation studies(qtd in Qiyi Liao, 2002:P149-160),the research of Even-Zohar and this dissertation both belo

They are the times background of the Polysystem Theory, the briefintroduction of Polysystem Theory including its origins, main contents and somehypotheses concerning translation, and

13、the evaluation and further development ofPolysystem Theory in translation circle of China and abroad.2.1 The Influence of Holmes and His Idea to ConstructTranslation StudiesAccording to some scholars such as Pan Wenguo (2002), the whole westerntranslation research history can be divided into three p

14、hases. The first is calledtraditional translation studies dating from the Cicero Period to 1959. The second onecalled modern translation studies is from 1959 when Roman Jacobson published hisfamous On Linguistic Aspects of Translation to 1972. The third one namedcontemporary translation studies is f

15、rom 1972 when James Holmes published hismilestone paper The Name and Nature of Translation Studies till today. Not only wasthis famous thought-provoking article considered as the milestone and the declarationand “the founding statement for the field”(Gentzler, 2004:P93), but also James Holmeshimself was considered to be the founder of Translation Studies School because of hisinfluence on so many scholars at tha
